Much Help Needed

I own a old force motor 50 hp probably 1974. The motor came on a eldocraft boat that i recently purchased for $1000. After first purchasing the motor I tried starting the motor and it worked fine other than it needed a carb job, I went back out to the motor around a week later to do some facial work and tried to start it and nothing happened other than a noticeable click. I changed the cellonoid and it again was working fine. Not 2 days later I ran into another problem when I try to start the motor nothing happens no click no anything. The motor is getting power because it chokes when i push in the key. I used to be able to directly hook jumper cables to the starter and it would start after a few tries, however, now it wont even do that, still gets power and when I try the starter it "pops up" for lack of the technical term but only turns the motor head once and very slowly repeats. I have no idea what it could be. Any help on info on this boat motor and my problem would be very greatly appreciated.

Re: Much Help Needed

The starter on my 150 HP Force acted the same way. I removed the starter then disasembled the starter. It turned out there was some dirty grease/gunk causing one of the brushes to not make good contact. Clean and check the condition of the brushes and their contacts. Make sure the springs are compressing the brushes to make good contact. After a good cleaning mine worked fine.

Re: Much Help Needed

What ship said AND check ALL the connections from the battery to the key. Most times its caused by a lack of a solid connection. Yes the lighter amp stuff will inguage and click but there isnt the amps needed to turn it over more than once.

If there is a little crud under any electrial connection related to the starting of the motor it may just be robbing the power needed to turn it over properly.
