Just wondering if anyone here uses them for huntin and runing in skinny water. What would be the best choice for a 17 or 18 ft jon. Who makes the best, and is the surface drive better or worse than the original long tail. Also what are they like in open water, in say 2 foot chop. Thanks guys, I value your opinions.

Sean

Re: Mudmotors...

I've only run one true Louisiana mud boat.

It was a wooden job. About 20' long and had a Wisconsin/Robin air cooled V-Twin. Can't remember how many HP.

The boat was flat boittom with a slight tunnel for the inboard drive and "mud prop". The prop looked like a giant auger and it performed the same in the mud or weeds.

It was slow and a handful in the chop.

I found the "Go-Devil" type to be more efficient and easier to operate. You can lift the prop out of the water to clear it.

Niether had a reverse. You had to know where you were going. :)

The Mud motors are very popular in Saginaw Bay. Mi where I duck hunt. The vangard or honda power plant on the GO-Devil frame is what most guys run.

I believe boat stability is a function of hull design, I think.
