noticed my muffs had fallen off the outdrive while idling in the drive way. i have no idea how long it was running dry could have been seconds, could have been 5 minutes.. It was attached at one point , so it wasnt run completely dry, and i know there was coolant running through the engine at least, and the engine temp did not rise. Anyway , i removed the lower unit to change the impeller, (i needed to change that and gear oil still anyway) anyhow, the old impeller actually looks fine. is it hard to physically label an impeller faulty just by looking at it? i am just curious, i will be changing it anyway. also what else should i check for? i bought a kit to replace all the seals as well, including the face seal. so i mean outside of that. thanks for an input!

Re: muffs fell of while running

What ruins the impeller is heat from friction, due to lack of lubrication and cooling from the water flowing through. It would not take very much to keep the impeller cool and lubricated. The exhaust on the other hand is very hot gasses and takes a substantial water flow to cool. So if you had reduced flow your impeller may not show damage, but you could have done major damage to your rubber exhaust parts.

"and i know there was coolant running through the engine at least, and the engine temp did not rise."

But it sounds like you have a closed system.
