Hi,
I just bought my first boat. It didn't start, luckily the previous owner sent out his mechanic and got it started. The starter needed replacing. But I was wondering is it safe to run an engine that big on muffs? Or should I not? Smoke started coming out of the outdrive, but I think it was exhaust. I had the muffs on and water flowing. I only left it on for like 30 seconds. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

You should be fine. That was exhaust coming out; just don't leave the muff on for a long time.

Ayuh,...As long as your garden hose can keep up,+ there's excess water leakin' from the muffs,...
No Problem,... That's how We all do it...

i just had mine running this morning for about a half hour maybe 40 minutes. ran it up to temp, adjusted carb, checked timing and idle speed and made sure i had no leaks in my cooling system. I never "goose it" or run it over 1200 RPMs though. also I make sure the drive is somewhat in the down position and NOT in trailer position so there is no weird angle on the U-joint. also I always keep an eye on temp and water flow.
