Must choke to start

I have a 2000 9.9 j10evlss motor. Motor has been running great. While fishing the downrigger cable got caught in the prop. We quickly shut off engine. I unwound cable from prop and there was no apparent damage. We started motor and everything seems to run fine. But when starting I must choke everytime (even when warm) and as soon as I slow down the idle speed to put in gear it instantly stops. If I leave it idle a little faster I can put in forward and it runs fine. Any ideas on fix ?

Doubt it. The idle adjustment knob may be broken. Advance the idle with the twist grip. Don't advance to the point where shifting is rough.
