I bought a motor that had a 115 evinrude cover, but when I checked the serial numbers, it turned out to be a 1988 88hp. Why would this be?

The shape of the hoods are identical. What is the model number of your engine?

OMC did not make a 115 from 1986 through 1989. The 115 equivalent engine was called a 110 those years. People change cowlings all the time. You can't go by the cowling hp since they are easily swapped from year to year. As you noted it's the model number on the serial plate that is the bible. A 110 engine those years had the bubble back exhaust-a very different engine from a flatback 88. The 110's also have a factory auto mix oil system, with a separate oil tank that goes in the boat. The 88 engine does not and requires premix fuel.

Not to hijack, but my buddies "115" from the '80's is a flat back running on premix. I'll pull the numbers today, it does look just like my 1996 '88 special under the cowl, only older wiring with twin power packs. Wonder if he actually has a 115?

85-115 are the same motors on the appearance and size..difference is in the carbs and exhaust and some ports in the block none of which you cant see..well you can see the larger exhaust housing if you know what your looking for...look at the model number to tell what you have..not the cowl..

the first two numbers are the HP...so it is an 88 an the CC near the end shows it was made in 1988. the last C means nothing really...the MS means it didnt come with tilt and trim but did come with electric start and that it is a "special" motor so as it rode the short bus when it was a little 1 cylinder kid...I am not sure why it has the 88 numbers in the middle. o yea the L means 20" shaft.

Yep, that model number indicates the engine is a 88hp, not a 115hp as you were led to believe. Possibly the previous owner wasn't aware of that conflict.

So now, either you're still happy with the deal and accept it, or explain to the seller what you have discovered and ask for a refund, or get ready to visit the small claims court to settle the problem.

You will find that the 88 will perform just about the same as a 115 out of the hole. It's at the top end, where the 115's horsepoer will pull ahead of an 88.

Regarding the flat back 115 - prior to 1984, they were flat backs. After 1984, any 115s were bubble backs, as they re-rated the motors at the propshaft, with the old 140 bubble becoming the 115/110, the old 115 becoming the 100, etc. The 85/90 stayed the same - I guess because it was a "strong" 90 before the switch, and became an "average" 90 afterwards, falling within the 10% variance allowed...

Good deal or not -- if the seller advertised the engine as a 115 or even implied in conversation that it was a 115 you have a case. You did not get what you paid for. But -- as in situations like this it is always "buyer beware". Know what you are buying and how to identifiy it.

in texas our outboard motors are titled and the horsepower rating is on the title. i would never buy a motor unless the seller has the title in hand for future reference.
