Tos skip all the story jump down to the paragraph with (***) at the beginning
I've had my 1969 Johnson 6hp for about 10 years, got it running when I first got it changed the brittle impeller. and when the shift arm popped out... It has sat in the garage ever since. Well it was upside down at my pops (IN GEAR) for the first 5 years... Nephews were having a blast pulling the string making the prop spin thus wearing out the plastic pinion gear which I discovered 5 years later when I scolded one of them for pulling on the string... Didn't know it was an ongoing game for them till I opened it up to discover the wear. So, I took it home!
Here is the back story. I used to have a 10ft jon boat and took it out with my Pops 5hp motor, The speed scared the hell out of me. My bro took the motor out a couple weeks later with a 14 ft jon boat and told my pop it barely moved.(I thought it was because he was fat) I used it again and this time it seemed to be running at half speed. Told my Pop and he said my Bro was accusing me of breaking it We found a broken piston arm but it kept running on one piston (AT HALF SPEED) Bro must have set it down in the mud in shallow water.
Jump forward about 15 years to present day. I recently acquired a 14' Jon boat, got it registered and dusted off the Ole 6hp Johnson. Replaced the Pinion gear, the gasket on top of the head and a few other parts. I do have the 3 blade prop in metal(Cast aluminum I think) and also have one in brass
I was still not getting much if any water flow, took off the head and all around the pistons was this white crust stuff blocking the flow, cleaned it out and now flows perfectly. in a can it revs up and sounds like a motocross bike. and in gear empties the can!
(***) When on the water at idle it revs up loud, in gear it putts along about 5 mph (If that) I've seen videos of 14 ft (EMPTY LIKE MINE) Jon boats flying down the water and expected that from mine but nope.
I haven't checked the carb or diaphram other than taking off the thumb screw and cleaning the screen. I was having probs with it running for a minute and shutting off but it's just the old worn out fuel connector, Fixed it with a couple of O-rings. Any suggestions why I seem to be running at half speed or less?
