My 9.8 is finally running. Things I did
Replaced all the wiring. Every piece. Cleaned the points and reset them. The kill switch threw me for a loop till I read this. It works backwards of the norm. New isolators, both were cracked. New fuel hoses and changed the "connectors" over to brass.
Got it started, ran for 2 minutes. Quit would not start until the next day. Then next day same same thing happened. Pulled both plugs plenty of spark. Drove me crazy for a week. Changed the condenser same thing. Finally found it. Top coil was going bad. Finally bad enough that it failed just for one pull with the plugs out. Replaced it from the junkyard 10 bucks. I also sanded the paint off of the block where the bracket made contact. Thank you CDI for the info how to troubleshoot this one.
Ran a long time and then would flood. Could not maintain low end mixture. Replaced carb gasket and good to go now. Mercury still has isolators in their warehouse. you just need to call the right parts guy. Crowley got them for me. Points are on the net for $33.00 each if you look hard enough. There is no reason to spend $80.00 bucks on a $2.00 condenser. And in speaking with a VERY knowledgeable person on this motor he said he had never seen one go bad and as over engineered as that part is I can see why.
I need to link and synch it now just to make sure. I have no manual. any help is appreciated.
