I bought a used 115 Merc 4 cylinder (1989). It ran fine for about 30 minutes. Then, the RPM's would sky and the motor would die. I found a severed oil line and replaced it. I took it out and got only 3000 RPM out of it. I took it out again and got less than that (about 2000-2500 RPM). It starts and idles fine; runs well slow. A dealer is telling me that the problem is probably the stator ... can someone confirm or recommend?

Merc115 Did the motor by chance run on gas only for a few seconds. Often when a 2 cycle runs without oil they will run real good for a few seconds because the engine is not firing oil but then *POOF*. Otherwise it does sound like a stator.

Re: My 1989 115 Merc Is Fading Fast

I am not sure how long the oil line was severed. The first time I had it out it ran GREAT for about 20 to 30 minutes before it started to act crazy. I thought that there was a problem with my prop because the RPM's would soar while pushing no wake. I took it out a couple more times (not running it very much) before I found the severed oil line. Once I found and fixed the line, I thought I had everything solved. The next time I had it out is when my current problems started.

I had it out several times last week and today; same thing. Starts well, idles well, runs well up to about 1800/2000RPM. Will not do more than 2500RPM and anything over about 1800 sounds like a struggle. I would like to think that the stator is my only problem, I am afraid that the lack of oil caused me some more serious problems. Do you still believe that the stator could cause the problem that I am having? What do you think about a problem with compression on the 3 and 4 cylinder? Or maybe a problem with the acceleration pump?
