This morning I was sitting there watching Springer contemplating life. As I was thinking of washing dishes I suddenly smelled smoke. It smelled like electrical problems at first. I jumped up and did the flight of the butterfly around the house trying to find where it came from. Couldn't see anything, but the smell was getting stronger. I ran to the basement and checked the furnace and breaker box, nothing there. No smoke in the basement. I checked the dryer since we had a fire there a few years ago. When I got back into the kitchen I could see a heavy cloud of smoke in the air. I checked everything again, stove, toaster, curling iron, still nothing. My son was following me around enjoying the game, but he was starting to cough a little. I was just about to take him and run outside when I saw the cause.

The other day we made a big pot of chili in a roaster. We also celebrated my 4 year olds birthday. Since I have not done dishes for a day, the roaster still sat on the counter empty (almost) and the cake pan sat on top of the roaster. I saw that the chocolate cake was smoking. The roaster not only did not get washed, it was also still plugged in! He had reached the knob and turned it to high! I pulled the plug, got a hot pad and moved the cake pan allowing a huge cloud of smoke to billow out. Inside of the roaster there was a wooden spoon with a plastic grip, or what used to be a plastic grip. The plastic was a puddle, and the wood was starting to smolder. I grabbed that and threw it into the yard, opened the windows and turned the fan on. Now the house stinks!

So the little tyke is learning to cook, that’s not such a bad thing............is it. Maybe he's got his own chili recipe. Just kidding, glad all ended well for ya.

Be thankful that nobody got hurt and no real damage was done.

It's amazing what mischief 2-year-olds can get themselves into in a short time, isn't it?

My brother tried the same, (he was 27 at the time)

He put some frozen sausage in a skillet with some water, fell asleep, woke up to the house FULL of black smoke, stunk BAD

...My brother is on the Fire dept, he came in the next day with a smell neutrilizer machine and took care of it great.

If you need new furniture and carpet, call your insurance company.

If you just need the small gone, call the local fire dept and see if they happen to have the machine, might do it for ya.

I did that once too  Fell asleep with a pot of noodles cooking in a Teflon pot. Really stinky. I think the smell was still there when I moved. Did you know Teflon turns bright blue when left on a gas stove too long?

Yikes!
I have one of those little 'angels' too. He touches everything when you're not looking. Glad everything's ok. Mine has a recently lost his fascination with the electrical outlets. He's given up 'cause he can't get the protective caps out.
A buddy of mine fell asleep making a box of macaroni and cheese one night. Yessiry... fire department and everything. Grand total for the midnight snack $10 g's.

Glad every thing is ok, but...

I don't think it was the two year old that was at fault here.

It sounds to me like he was doing what two year olds do, and that is exploring his environment.

The parent is the one that is supposed to be smarter than the 2 year old, and ensure that the environment around that 2 year old is as safe as possible.

Yep, our fault. My wife emptied the roaster and put the leftovers away, I was supposed to do the dishes. Both of us forgot to unplug the thing, knowing if it has a knob on it he will turn it.

wow deputy ya got lucky :) :)
happens to all sooner or later. thats why I got gray hairs and earned everyone of them :) .
but kids will do it. I was the king of the dumb stunts. one at age 4 allowed me to stay at Riverside hospital in newport news VA for 3 months with 6 months of follow up visits :) . parents got a few extra gray ones that day and I still have the marks to prove it :) :)

Father in law always gave the advice.... never get mad at the little one, only get mad at yourself for leaving something assesable.... and very true it is.

...but the one is now old enough to know better on a lot of levels, so that only lasts for so long. but at 2yo, everything is pretty much fair game.
