This morning I was sitting there watching Springer contemplating life. As I was thinking of washing dishes I suddenly smelled smoke. It smelled like electrical problems at first. I jumped up and did the flight of the butterfly around the house trying to find where it came from. Couldn't see anything, but the smell was getting stronger. I ran to the basement and checked the furnace and breaker box, nothing there. No smoke in the basement. I checked the dryer since we had a fire there a few years ago. When I got back into the kitchen I could see a heavy cloud of smoke in the air. I checked everything again, stove, toaster, curling iron, still nothing. My son was following me around enjoying the game, but he was starting to cough a little. I was just about to take him and run outside when I saw the cause.

The other day we made a big pot of chili in a roaster. We also celebrated my 4 year olds birthday. Since I have not done dishes for a day, the roaster still sat on the counter empty (almost) and the cake pan sat on top of the roaster. I saw that the chocolate cake was smoking. The roaster not only did not get washed, it was also still plugged in! He had reached the knob and turned it to high! I pulled the plug, got a hot pad and moved the cake pan allowing a huge cloud of smoke to billow out. Inside of the roaster there was a wooden spoon with a plastic grip, or what used to be a plastic grip. The plastic was a puddle, and the wood was starting to smolder. I grabbed that and threw it into the yard, opened the windows and turned the fan on. Now the house stinks!
