My 85hp Force spits water rather than a strong steady stream.

It shoots out plenty of water, but it's not a strong steady stream like I see on other boats. I'm guessing that I should change the impeller? Or is this normal on these motors?

did you install a telltail on your force or are you referring to the spits coming out of the 2 ports on the back of the engine cover... if thats what your referring to and your boat doesnt have a tell tail this is normal...

I'm referring to the 2 ports on the back of the engine cover. I'm not really even sure what a telltail is.

Some outboards have a small outlet on the side.Called a tel-tale.Lets U know if the motor is pumping.U can install a tel-tale,it's easy.
Your motor, the exhaust is mainly underwater through the snout. The two holes on the back can either show LOTS of water or just spit and dribble.
If U are worried by all means change the impeller.Better to be safe.J

Dustin, I think I have the same motor as you, and I asked the same question at one time. I was used to a mercury where the water comes out in a stream. The two holes that you are talking about will show a "spray" of water instead of a stream. As Jerry indicated, install a tell-tale. I did, and it gives me peace of mind. It only takes about 10 mins to put one on. There is a sticky at the top of the Force section that describes how to install one. But basically a tell-tale is a tube, ran out the side of the motor housing that will show a stream of water like you were expecting to see. You can install this tube anywhere on the motor so that you can see it from the drivers position.

Good luck and post some pictures of your Bluefin

I have a 1986 Force 85 hp with this setup. Mine has the 2 big holes too. I was worried because it was only a spray coming out. I put a new pump kit in and still get the same spray. So, if you're worried, change the impeller/pump. But, don't be completely surprised if the flow doesn't change much.
