Ok so I did it again, bought a boat in winter without a sea trial. It is a sailboat this time though. What could go wrong? LOL sails look good, hull looks nice etc. this week we started getting some warmer weather. I get home from work last night and MAN, I thought the neighbor must have started to spread his fields. Then it started to hit me a little more, that's not fertilizer, it smells almost like a dead animal. Start looking around and............the closer I get to the boat the stronger the odor gets.
I know it has some residual water in the bilge area. Now that it's warm out I can tip it back and drain that. I had looked in all the holds and places in the cabin, didn't see anything.
The joke here, is she said she got divorced, maybe she just knocked the old boy off and stuffed him in the boat.

So the question is....assuming I get it drained out and the smell remains. Any good products for reducing odors quickly?

Scatter a whole box of fabric softener sheets around the boat?

There has to be a source. Good luck locating it. Only the nose knows.

... or good ole fashioned baking soda might be worth a try.

You could always add some resin/glass covered additions to the boat and it would take a long time to dissipate. Maybe a live well, you would be the first in a sail boat. But resin isn't too obnoxious in my opinion...better then a dead cat (or previous owner’s spouse)!!!

One of natures best deodorizers is vinegar, use the white vinegar found at most grocery outlets. Will also help to clean your bilge and is enviromentaly safe. Vinegar will smell at first but will dissapate very quickly, also great for cleanup after cleaning fish.

If you're doing just the bilge, use what murderers use-- good ol' bleach. (diluted down some of course)

a match? I use one in the john all the time, if it doesn't cover the smell use it to burn the boat.
