He spent $25,000 on this "inspected" boat." First time he took it out it had problems. The marina is saying that the engine is fried and it will cost between $10,000 and $15,000 to fix. I raise a serious BS flag on that one.

What engine is the Mercruiser 5.0? GM? Ford? Shouldn't he be able to buy a short block and switch out the parts? Links to good threads would be appreciated.

I've pulled a 470 out of my own boat and rebuilt it, no sweat. I don't see any reason I couldn't help my buddy do the same ( he's not mechanical, but he will buy me some high end bourbon/scotch/cigars for my trouble, so I'm all in).

Thanks,
Nate

That's a bummer for him.

Seems like the first thing to do would be to take it somewhere else and get a 2nd opinion.

Second thing would be to make a list of exactly what the symptoms/issues are if wanting troubleshooting help here is desired.

3rd thing would be to get the year of the engine/drive and serial numbers and post those here so everyone will know what the package is to help with.

what about operator malfunction. Should never start a trip with out inspection of all fluids.Should never run with elevated temps. How about some history of how`s it fried, instrument readings, etc.

Let's start off with a serial number for the engine or at least year built and/or some pictures so we know what your friend has otherwise we are just guessing blind.

I never could get a straight answer, really. Fresh water got into the cylinders? I don't know. It's a moot point anyway. He's just going to sell it to recoup some money and buy another one. Has no interest in pulling the engine and rebuilding it.

To answer the question you all are thinking: medical equipment sales for DOD hospitals.

I would start with getting to the person that "inspected " it.I assume someone was paid to inspect it . If so,thats who I want to explain what is wrong.Charlie

If he is so willing to just lose the money and move on its likely he realizes its his fault. I wouldn't sweat it. I would recommend he get some training in boat operation and daily maintenance so it doesn't happen again.

A guy I know paid way to much for an "inspected" boat. The first time out, one engine overheated (the first time I've ever seen a small block Chevy crack the block from overheating. It cracked the deck from the cylinder to a cooling port. The head over the crack had a piece right out of it.) Any way, when we pulled the engine, the bulkhead ahead of it had chunks of rotten wood falling out of it. He tried to go back on the seller and the inspector but apparently there was some fine print involved!

We surveyors must have insurance. I could miss something and the boat sinks and kills everyone on board of course I wont mention I had them tied up and weighed down with concrete bricks because nobody tries to sue a Mafioso who uses boat surveying as a money laundering front. So far 26.3 million successfully laundered.
But I do have insurance for those piddly couple hundred dollar claims, you betcha.
