Ok so I've got a 1992 3.0L alpha one. I went to a mechanic because the when the engine was running it was a bit noisy. When I went to pick it up he told me that for $3000 he could have me goin' again, and he couldn't solve what the problem was and that He would have to pull the drive and that would cost alot just to look inside. Needless to say I smiled and took my boat home and began the repairs myself.

I rebuilt the carb and fuel pump, new filters, and distributor. That fixed alot of the problems. The main thing was the gimble bearing. I was told when you turn if there is loud noise it's either the gimble or the U joints. I pulled the drive in 20min and I've never done it before. I borrowed a 5lb puller from Canadian tire, and had the bearing out in 2 good taps. I lined up the new bearing and installed it in about 5 min. Next I replaced the appropriate seals, and with much playing around, I got the drive on and bolted in place. I started the engine and it runs quiet as a mouse now.

All this to say if anybody wants to try a gimble bearing repair, do it yourself. You'll save alot of money, show some stupid mechanic who said you can never do it by yourself and that only their mechanics were able, that they're on drugs. It's very easy in my opinion and this was my first. I would say in total I maybe spent 4 hours absolute tops on this, and it paid off very well. So that's my story and if you read this long thank you, and don't ever be afraid to try. thanks

Did you align it with the tool? If not you will have problems very soon.
