OK I have a '98 90ELPTO...I have the OEM manual and impeller kit. Was noticing in the manual that it calls for loctite 271 upon reassembly. according to loctite specs this requires heat to remove. so is it safe to say that when I start removing the lower unit and water pump components that there is a good chance that i will need some heat to break the loctite from the previous impeller job (assuming it was done per manual specs). if so, what is the best heat source for this? i dont have any torches/heat gun or anything like that...what would work best for someone with little to no experiences with that...i can use a soldering iron and thats about the extent of my "heat" haha...thanks

Re: my first time doing a water pump repair

do not use any heat, nor use any locktite at re-assemble,,no need
when removing the bolts and nuts that are suspect, first try to tighten them(barely) first, then loosen them.

If you feel compelled to use the soldering iron,,run it back and fourth to distribute the heat,,,it will take some time without a torch,,,which I feel is not neccessary.

Since you have never done this before,,go on youtube and type in "how to replace water pump on 150 merc" this may help you also.

I' second the no heat. Mine was really stuck, so I took it to
an expert. He worked on the bolts with some penetrating oil,
until they came loose. He used a big rubber hammer to break the
lower ens apart. I take it off every other year--just to keep
it loose.;)

Yes as previously mentioned, tighten the bolts first just to break the locktite then remove. You should have no need for heat, maybe a little tight coming off for a while, then they will come off.Good luck.

Do Not use loctite. Make sure you are using a washer and lock nuts.
Thats all I ever use. In fact I use never seaze on all studs and
nuts. It's never good to bust a stud or bolt.
KLike it was sais tighten the nuts a touch and back off.

Re: my first time doing a water pump repair

Hi to all,

Lost my 48 spl to katrina, replaced it with 1981 johnson 70 hp. In 2007. Spent the last few years rebuilding my home in St. Bernard and finally finnished. Well a few months ago started rebuilding my trailer and finally took the boat out.

When I replace the engine I replaced the water pump impella and s/s houseing and the thermostat and some other grommets in the stat area. When I originally replaced the stat I tested and had strong pee stream but when I ran the boat fast the stream would stop. But after stopping the engine and restarting it would start again.

I went out yesterday and same thing. Strong pee stream and it would stop after running fast. But after a few times it stopped altogether and only had a low stream when restarting engine. I fished and let it cool. I trolled back to the launch. Restarted at launch to put boat on trailer, very weak pee stream.

Any info would be appreciated.

Sincerly,
David

Sounds like a tear down on the pump is coming.
When in doubt about an impeller-time to replace.

Re: my first time doing a water pump repair

ok everything is going well...but do have a question. the manual says to tighten the water pump housing bolts to 60in lbs. first off i dont have a torque wrench in inch lbs but if im not mistaken, 60in lbs is pretty dang tight. with that said, seems like that much torque would damage the aluminum pump housing. manual says 60in lbs but manual also says use loctite so...any thoughts or suggstions about tightening these without a torque wrench? or with even?

Thumpbass..... no, 60 inch-lbs is very little torque. To put it into perspective, 1 foot-lbs is equal to 12 inch-lbs. Therefore 60 inch-lbs is 60/12 = 5 foot-lbs..... very little torque.

Re: my first time doing a water pump repair

if your not done,,,I use a 1/4 rachet,,do not over tighten,,,no need.

you might want to have a buddy help you re-install the unit,,lining up the spline, shift and water tube by yourself can be challenging,,,first time I did it by myself,,I learned some new bad words,,,:D

Re: my first time doing a water pump repair

exactly what i used...tightened just to where i felt like any tighter would damage/bend the housing...snug and even.
got lucky lining up the shaft, shifter and water tube...got it in first try.
fired up and water pumping strong...thanks fellas!
