i as given a 12 ft 1968 dobyn boat, with a 1958 motor that was in a flood and siezed. i managed to get it un-siezed, was running in my tank, so its time for a trip. i loaded the girlfriend, kids and boat, then proceded down to the river. backed down the long, narrow ramp, launched the boat, and parked with no problems.
okay, here we go! hold onto your hats, i fired up ther motor, and its running like a top. kick it into gear, ease the throttle forward, feeling the wind in the hair all for the total distance of 10 feet. motor dies, wont start.
turns out i forgot to torque the flywheel down after i was done working on the motor.

Well don't feel bad, I didn't torque the flywheel down on my 1957 35hp E'rude that I have on the back of my aluminum boat, sheared the key, but I wasn't on the water though :p.

Where are you at? I don't know what kind of river you are on,but a 12' boat with 4 people aboard sounds dangerous. I boat the Illinois river, and limit my 14 footer to 3 people.[plate on boat says 4 people @ 150 lbs each]
I'm kind of new to boating, maybe I'm wrong,or maybe you are on a lot smaller river??

i think it would depend on the age/size of the kids. but a 12 footer is awfully small.

oregon, it was the tualatin river, very slow moving, otherwise it would have gone in the lake.
