Re: my fist boat and how to start the engine

To start any Merc outboard requires you pump up the primer bulb, choke or prime the motor, set the idle higher and crank it. Older Mercs have the chokeplates and a seperate choke button, along with the cold start lever, which should be up.

Newer Mercs have a primer solenoid operated when you push in the ignition key, and you can advance the throttle w/o engaging forward.

What type of motor(6 inline, 4 inline...) and what is the year?

Fresh fuel, check the oil resevoir to make sure it has sufficient two stroke oil (TCW3). Charge the battery. At the ramp, squeeze the primer bulb in the fuel line until firm. Raise the fast idle lever on the control box. Turn the key to RUN (not start) and push in on it and hold for a count of 8 or so. This is the primer system and it will inject fuel directly into the engine. Now turn the key to START. The alternate choke/priming process is to simply push in on the key while turning the key to start. Experience has shown that the first method results in quicker starts. When the engine starts, lower the fast idle lever to a comfortable warm up RPM (1000 - 1200). Be ready to push in on the key to "prime" the engine some more if it tends to die off. When the engine is warmed up, lower the fast idle lever all the way and away you go. Note that you will not be able SHIFT into forward or reverse with the fast idle lever raised.

thats how my 150 is. pump primer, push ignition key in for the choke, and raise the idle up by pushing the button on the throttle that allows it to raise rpms but not engauge in gear trn key and fires right up!
