i thought it was time to get to my drive before it needed any repiars and today was so nice why not

(step 1) pull drive with all the stories about prying and wedgeing and chaining the drive to a tree i was worried

but it came off in about 6 minutes hardly had to shake it and no signs of water in the bellows or shift area

(step 2) pull apart drive on bench this was a bit harder the big through bolts were pretty salted up but a littel heat and they came out the only broken bolt was the 3/8 under the zink i could not get enough heat to free it up

it was pretty easy to drill out

(step 3) 6 mm water pump bolts this had me really worried about breaking them but some heat on the case outside of each one for about 40 seconds and they came right out

a few pictures

f486cc65.jpg

well the ujoints are tight and not rusted so i glad i did not put off changeing the bellows any longer
f486cc62.jpg

some tape on the oil passage to keep everything out for cleanup
f486cc5b.jpg

those GEN II two pumps hold up a LONG time will see if anybody can guess the age

f486cc58.jpg

that quad ring looks so much bigger in the service manual

(step 4)the dreaded bellows so far the trim senders came right off i was worried what the salt would do to the mounting screws

tomorrow will see how much those hinge pins hurt me

tommays

The Gen2 pump fins are twice as long as the Gen1. That means they aren't cramped up in the housing as much as the older ones and have to bend less. Because of this they last much longer....

The impellers like you have on the Gen II drive are Low pressure, High volume pumps, the older Alpha drives with the shorter vanes are higher pressure and lower volume pumps.
The "Floppy Vane" impellers as we know them are less prone to sets and dry running compared to the older pumps.

Regarding your choice of tools for working on the precision parts of an outdrive......Think it's big enough???? ;)

its only a 3 pound i am saveing the 10 for the hinge pins

what can i say i only worked on saltwater stringers before this

it was to tap my 5/8 box back and forth to break lose the salt build up on the 4 big case through bolts the nuts came right off but those bolts were in hard

i guess 9 years was a littel to long to put it off but its apart with no damage and the pump is much better than i thought

tommays

tommays,
Has that out drive been run in fresh or salt water, looks really clean (inside and out) for having seen 9 seasons of use.

salt water mostly on long island up to 4 days on some of my trips out to block island and 1 week a year at lake george ny every summer

but a trailer and a lot of flushing and washing really pay off

tommays

what you need to change the bellows at home comes up a lot so i thought i would show you what i needed so far

f4702a93.jpg

you need at least a 24 person first aid kit i have a job that requires blood on a daliy basis so it did not suprise me that much

with out question the water hose which if you need a bellows needs to be changed is the hardest part of the job and its in the way of correctly glueing the new bellows

unlike auto water hoses its not molded to shape just a 14 inch piece of hose that realy does not want to go were it belongs

the upper shift shaft seals and the waterpump seal had not failed but would have not made it through the 2005 season

tommays

tommays
if there is much corrosion in the shift slide area due top the fine design seals, ya may as well do a shift cable kit while your in there. and yes sometimes the water inlet tube at the transom is a bit aggrevating.
keep the pics coming :)

Re: MY GEN II ADVENTURE UPDATE BELLOWS DONE DRIVE ON AND MOTOR RUNNING HAPPY

its going to be my fall project rod i moved the cable at the motor and its very smooth one of the good parts of trailering the inside of the drive looks like brand new no water at all has gotten in :D

from what i have seen so far i got to think that the guy who built my drive when it was new did a really good job with the perfect seal and belows glue cause its has come apart quite well

i am now a firm believer in yearly drive removeal but i have two children in collage right now and i have to pick my battles

last year i replaced all the trim hoses ,pump mount and other stuff that was showing signs of age

tommays

boom

show me a stringer that only needed 350 dollars in parts after 9 years in saltwater

it cost more money to keep my trailer in safe condition than the black anchor

they may do fine out there but you dont see any alive around here

tommays

Dat's 'cause they are all out boatin' instead of fixin, tommays! :p

Seriously, unfortunately they are out of print and that does increase parts prices, but they are NOT as bad as many let on here. I just had mine torn down, after 24 years (for general inspection), many of those hard driven with multiple skiers. They did replace a couple of expensive shafts that were showing wear on the splines. Other than that I've had one water pump replacement but I'm still on the original set of ball gears. It did cost $1200.00 to go thru but not bad for 24 yrs.

Re: MY GEN II ADVENTURE UPDATE BELLOWS DONE DRIVE ON AND MOTOR RUNNING HAPPY

tommays,

Great job. Great pics. I replaced my bellows a few months ago, getting worn on the outside edges, where the inside part of the hinge pins rubs on them. My drive is in the same condition as yours, also well flushed, and has over 950hrs in the Indian Ocean. Also do trips that last a few days. I replaced the elbows with the Merc genuine SS ones about 5 years ago and don't see I'll have a corrosion problem in my lifetime. Like you, I believe in a 'yearly' removal of a drive, but these ones are pretty right for a minimum of 3 years. Last pump impeller I relaced was 5 years old and still looked like the day I put it in.

Keep up the great stuff,

Chris..............

Thanks for the advice on the ease on changing the bellows. Mine is a 1998 Monterey w/ very low hrs and was thinking it overdue for a change. Your post on the ease talked me into it. Maybe? haha.

all back together and the trim set to 20-3/4

the service manual was good

BUT the best info i got for this job was the bit and pieces that my fellow iboat members posted about different parts of the job when they did it

all those littel things filled in the blank spots in the service manual

thanks
tommays
