I have an 1988 OMC 3.0 litre with Cobra drive.. Last year I put a new shift cable(eengine to drive) on and ajusted using the guide at funkopolis! got out on the water five times and had a great time! This year I pulled the drive and serviced (lubbed the u-joints and gimbal bearing, drained drive and refilled with gear lube, slapped it all back together put the muffs on cranked her right up and checked her shifting- It was a dream come true- no problems !! headed for the boat ramp.. Put my boat in the water and headed out at idle, when i got out of the no wake zone i put the throttle to her, I then heard a load thunk and the boat acted like it hickupped-- this follow in rapid succession by repeated thunks then came out of gear all the way-- glad i had reverse. made it back to the boat ramp looking very funny-- My question is where can I get a new gear set from? And can i put this together myself --I have a clymer manual, IT says I need a special shiming tool to complete reassyembly, But i have read a lot of postings where people have been doing this themselves, any thoughts ? or helpful ideas I am of limited funds and would like to do the work myself!!

While I am by no means a marine mech. Are you sure you need new gears? Maybe it isn't going into gear all the way?

DougV>

I agree with djvan. Don't jump to conclusions about new gears. Also, make sure the drive is full with gear oil. It can settle and you may be missing some if you didn't follow the procedure to the letter.
