Crab Bait,

Absolutely marvelous, super job! Green with envy. :D

Two questions.

1. How dd you install the foam in the floor?

2. Describe the painting method you used?

Thanks.

Re: my little 16 ft center console

THANKS DJ.. well everyone i talked to said don't foam a wooden boat.. but the uscg says i have to.. plus i take out niegbors kids & stuff ..just wouldn't feel rite... so i thought & thought.. and usaually if i put enough brain power to something a solution pops up, eventually..

i put down cut pieces of pink owens/corning 1/8 inch foam.. i say 'pieces ' cause that's what the idea was..an were cut freehand with a razor knife, so when laid down together,, they had big wavy gaps .. then i took wide cheap masking tape an taped all the seams . then i mixed 2 part expandable foam an poured it on top .. did the same up front .. the theory bein' that any water could slide back & forth ( can't stop it mite as wel join it ) cause the deck stops at the aft bulkhead an from there back to transom it's just hull.. where there's a big bilge pump with an 1 1/4 hose. plus any water coming down from the top of the foam ( by way of hatches & bass pole lean seat up front),, can work it way thru the cheap tape an out.. the big void space up front is were the 11.5 gas tank is & is under the front bench seat.. the 2 long brown things are home alum. rain down spouts . for raceways for cable & wire & stuff.. since it's foamed... had to think ahead.. can you imagin' if i didn't an went to install the steerin' cable wires & stuff.. RUT-ROW ..i'm sorry for goin' on & on .. i'm typed out .. i'll type how i painted real soon.....that's also a long one..

Crab Bait,

Great idea on the foam. That stuff won't hold water and there are enough voids to allow it to run out-"that's thinkin".

How about the painting method, you mentioned roll and brush tip?

Have been a woodworker all my life and I would have to say that is some fine work. Great job and great show of patience.

Re: my little 16 ft center console

the roll & brush & tip method of painting on these top side paints is a good one.. especially if ya don't have 'spray skills or equipment..

the key/secreat weapon is the thinner.. without it ,, it's not possible .. interlux 333 thinner..

mix it to the the topside paint in the useaul manner to thin the paint out-of-the-can..pour mix into a roller tray.. an roll on paint with a thin nap foam roller.. just do a section-at-a-time.
it'll be a zillion tiny air bubbles.. take a dipped brush with a little 'mix paint' an also dipped into a separate container of 333 thinner & litely with a good soft brush,, knock off the bubbles with just the brush tip only..when the paint just starts to 'pull' wet brush again in the 333 thinner & maybe just a dab of more mixed paint.. but it's alot of thinner painting THAN alot of paint painting on the brush.. don't worry about gettin' it perfect,,, AIN'T gonna happend .. just knock down the bubbles & get out the major stuff & move on by rolling on another section an do it all over again.. don't spend much time blending the old 'done' section with the new rolled section.. just blend the best you can.. if you spend to much time there,, you'll have a one 'pulled paint mess' !! like i said ,, don't strive for perfection,, IT AIN'T GONNA HAPPEND..

ya see the trick is in the thinner.. the 333 , is special cause it takes along time to evaporate... thats the trick.. an by the time the paint dries ,, all the imperfections melt away & blend together..

so the key is to use a alittle paint an alot of thinner on the brush.. hurry an do the best you can without pulling the paint an have faith the the 'ugly' will disappear at the end..

Crab Bait,

Thanks. I was told that I will need to use a lot of thinner here in Arizona because of the high heat and low humidity.

That is a very interesting application method. I'll be trying it soon and keeping my fingers crossed.

Re: my little 16 ft center console

to DJ.. i just wanted to say , that i would of hated to paint these boats in a very hot & L O W humidity weather.. that 333 thinner is great stuff & dries slow.. but ARIZONA ,,, thats askin' alot from it.. good luck & keep us posted.. also it takes at least 2 coats of the 'method'.. an don't let the paint sag from too much thinner..

just like to say thanks again for all the wonderful respondses i received.. before this post runs its coarse.. HECK , i even got an honorary admiral promotion out of it from BOB VT....NOW I DON'T KNOW HOW TO ACT.. messed me all up....

it is a wonderful feelin' to spend the day in your own built boat. an sometimes have to beat people away with a paddle, for the most part..askin' a billion questions an won't let me leave to dock.. but i love it. an NEVER shunn a person wantin' to talk..also get alotta honks & thumbs up when trailerin'.. people love a wooden boat.. i always heard there's nothin' like a wooden boat an it's true .. they float.. an get no plasticky feelin' an quite ,no sound all.. it's just a good feelin'..

people always say i don't have time to do somethin' like that.. or i don't have the skills or patients..WELL who does have the time .?? i sure don't either.!! but i did it.. skills ,,, i'm just a dumb electrician.. but patients,,, THAT'S WHAT I DO HAVE.. just good ole' patients.. an alittle horse sense...an alotta 'STICK-TO'... that'll carry a man along way..heck ya can't mess up to much .. ya can't get
that much done at one time..

i do have a little heated work shop.. an plenty of power & hand tools that i acquired over the years...an had to buy some more.. but thats fine.. now i have more tools..built the boats out side, under a 10 x 20 canopy that ya see in sales flyers with the silver tarp bungee down..it's alot of fun i must say.. i'm at my best when i have a teeth sinkin' project at hand..( an i don't mean paintin' the kitchen ) I LOVE IT.. i just wanted to say all this in hoping it may inspire someone to do the same..i'll tell ya fellas,,, AIN'T NOTHIN' LIKE IT..

THANKS AGAIN , FELLAS..

Re: my little 16 ft center console

Crab Bait,

Wonderful boat.

I have been itching to do a little boat project myself and recently began looking at plans. Many of them use the stich and glue method with the epoxy and glass cloth. I have not seen any of the materials available where we are and it looked like a lot of skill was involved.

I opted for trditional plans instead but have not yet had a chance to begin the project. It's only a 10 foot sailboat.

How did you find doing the stitch and glue? Was it tricky at all and if so what did you learn?

Re: my little 16 ft center console

i don't know.. i think you got it backwards.. i built a 'traditional' & a stich & glue .. an the traditional was harder, more complicated & required more skill.. the s & g was a hole lot simplier & less skill ... heck , the plans required NOT tite fittin' wood... wanted gaps so per putty to get in an take up the gap.. what could be easier ..heck i can cut an make gaps.. heck ,i'm good at it..

also , a s&g is considered a 'composite boat' an is alot stronger then a regular wooden boat ,by far...an if ya can't find the stuff ,,, order it..most folks hafta..

but anyway ,, build what you got.. you'll enjoy it for sure..traditional is good ,too.. but stich & glue is easier.. heck thats why life is long.. so you can try different things & build more boats.. GOOD LUCK..

as far as what i learned.... it would fill the 'LIBRARY OF CONGRESS ' ...

Crab Bait,

That's a work of art. Word or warning, however, if you ever sell it, don't ever show pictures of it to your grand kids - they'd never forgive you for not keeping it for them! It's truly a beauty.

tcube

Great job and it looks like precise workmanship! I wanted to know what kind of foam you used for flotation in the hull.
