Hello All
After asking for and receiving advice on what GPS equipped VHF handheld to buy in the electronics forum I finally bought one. At my wifes prompting I shelled out and bought a ICOM M92d with GPS and DSC.
The question is to activate and use this radio I need to enter in a MMSI number. I found online that I can acquire my number through BoatUS but it will be forever tied to my boat. Since it is a handheld radio what happens if I take it onto a friends boat or I take it out in my kayak? Do I need to be a member of BoatUS to get it from them?
How can I get the MMSI to be for where the radio is and not tied to one boat? If I ever did have to hit the DSC I wouldn't want the rescue to be looking for a 20' Stingray and not a 8' red kayak that I might be in that day.
I think I read somewhere that someone got a MMSI without tying it to their boat?
