is that AWESOME or what? what a totally ballsy, never say die sorta guy

then I felt guilty, he would kill to feel pain when standing or anything for that matter

really brings home the adage of I was sad I had no shoes til I met a man who had no feet

Rock on dude, whoever you are!

Ray, thats a good example of "Anyone can accomplish anything if they put their mind to it".

As far as your tire goes, plug it anyway. It should hold until you get a new one. I've had punctures there before and plugged them with good results. If it was another half inch up on the sidewall, then it would be a problem. I saw your picture of it, and it looks like it is actually in the thicker part of the tread where the sidewall meets the tread. Shops are in for the money, they want to sell you new.

While leaving on my honeymoon several years ago, we got about 200 miles away from home and noticed a tire on the rear was going flat. I stopped and put more air in it, went to Walmart and purchased a plugger kit. Plugged it in the parking lot, then went back to the station and put the proper air pressure in it. The plug was in the same area as your tire. Tire didn't leak at all. Kept it on for the rest of the tires life.

You will do what you think best, but a 2 buck plug is cheaper than a new tire. The tire shop would probably plug it anyway and sell it to somebody unsuspecting.

Does your truck have a matching spare tire? If so, mount it, plug your bad one and use it as a spare.

Just a thought for you.....SS

just seems to me that they make more doing a 2 minute plug for 10 bucks than they do selling a tire, tires are a cutthroat biz, tho I guess they do allright selling lots of tires WITH computer balancing WITH road hazard, lol

Im considering going to one of the local chains and asking if they sell a road hazard warrantee

these things wear like iron according to the posts Ive read

gonna be on there a LONNNGGGG time!

lol

Put a patch plug in it Ray. It looks like a patch but it has a plug attatched to it. They buff the inside down and prep it just like a patch. They ream the hole just like a plug. Then they slobber glue over all of it and pull the plug out from the inside. It works great. I have used them for years on my race cars and never a problem. We run air pressures down as low as 12 pounds and they still stay attatched so I say its good.

I had a guy plug it, didnt leak so far, and yes, its a rear tire, lol, believe me, thats where it would go

just seems wierd, using fingers and a hammer there are times when a nail wont go (easily) into something spongy, but a THREE INCH LONG NAIL ... right in, straight as an arrow, grrrrrrrrrr

the post was more about that guy tho, and I watched him make a left, saw the other side, no legs at all, must be a hand shift, or automatic trans gold wing, all braking done by hand - im still impressed a day later!

Sorry to disagree with putting the plugged tire on the rear. First I wouldn't use a plug on a radial tire, there is too much flex. Second, I wouldn't put a plugged tire on the rear. If the plug is on a front tire and blows out, you can still control the truck/car with steering. If it is on the rear and blows out, you have a very high percentage chance of the vehicle fish-tailing and losing control.

Have you ever watched "COPS" and see them do a "PIT" manevuer? The same thing can happen with a rear tire going flat, especially on a curved road or banked turn.

The only way I would do a puncture repair of tire, is by breaking the tire down and using a heavy duty flat patch from the inside, especially if you are going to tow with it.

In the old days, this was called a "boot". In my opinion, the "boot" is more of a fail-safe repair of which I've never had failure.

...Bob in Calif...

BJ's has a Uniroyal RWL Tiger Paw 205 75 15 for 62.99 installed with computer balancing

once I hit the new year, Ill get one, just have to get thru Christmas, wont be towing til springtime

Its not that I dont have faith in plugs, its more a matter of wanting to keep it with new truck reliability, and haveing faith in a plug is not the same as the faith you have in a virgin tire, especially one with 700 miles on it

if they would have had one in stock, I probably would have installed it, I do things like that

If those "Paws" were original equipment, you might go back to the dealership and explain how you are not very cormfortable with the type of repair that was made to your tire and see what kind of road hazzard warranty comes with those tires on your new veHICKel. You might be suprised what they might do for you.

Just a thought.......

...Bob in Calif...

Castaway, if you set on replacing after Christmas, ok, can't say I disagree.

I understand some folks don't want to PATCH or Plug in the sidewall, because of Liability. Some of them however will patch, if you also have a tube put in, or Boot, like someone else mentioned.

If you decide to put the spare down, and keep that tire for your spare, I'd still patch and boot. You may find when you need that spare, that over time it leaked, with just a plug.

I understand your pain with this problem with a tire that only has 700 miles on it. My wife bumped a curb and poked a hole in the sidewall, right where it meets the treadwear, right after I bought her new 98 Dodge Truck. At that time, we were not pulling anything with it, it is the wife's truck, she didn't want a car THANK GOD! A local tire man, plugged the thing, and we ran it till I finally replaced all the tires on the truck, when I bought this boat. It held the whole time, and he mounted it on the rear passanger side, for safety's sake, when he mounted it.

That was the first thing I did Bob, but nails arent part of the program, besides, I have to harass the service dept about a little shudder i feel in that 1100 dollar auto trans right from take off

I hear ya Beast, sometimes its a good thing to have the little lady with something substantial (even if she IS gonna wind up driving yer brand new dually, lol) Her Outback is the most remarkable snow beast Ive ever driven in a quarter century of driving, jeeps, broncos, 4ws pickups, you name it, ive prolly had it out in the snow, none of em like the outback

course now, dragging a boat thru mud to get to a rather remote launch site, ummmmm, Bronco all the way!

mine is back on the rear passenger side too

since a rear sway bar IS gonna happen dammit, I dont want some plugged up hunk of chit on there, I really enjoy tossing something that handles decent thru corners, this little truck already handles as well as my 65 stang, if not better (well, before I tweaked the stang with koni shocks and shelby specs swaybars, lol (and export brance, and .. ah well, you know the drill!)

and not for nothin, but I think that sway bar will keep the tire better planted on right hand acceleration turns, pulling out of the car wash that tire lit right up without hardly any pressure on the gas, flathead was right!

time will tell, ah well, when it gets nasty, take the outback!

no worries, mate!

:D
