where your arrow points is the steering shaft going into your intermediate hsg. and you can see the plastic cap over the grease fitting. That shaft should just be greased Might be red grease.. but, it looks more like it's coming from the other steering shaft on your upper housing and then just dripping down across that gear.
The steering shaft seal on the upper hsg. there seals in upper unit oil. Never seen red gear oil, someone might have put ATF or something in your upper hsg.. need to get that red fluid outta there and use proper gear lube.

You'll need to reseal your upper housing if that's in fact where the red fluid's coming from. That steering shaft is a common leaker- lets water into the upper housing and destroys the gears and bearings.

How much would a repair like that cost?

Also it appears to only leak when the stern is lifted up. I had it raised overnight last night and it leaked. I put it down this morning and have not seen any recent fluid.

To remove the drive, reseal the upper housing, put in a new w/p impeller, pressure test the lower and reinstall with new fluids I would guess somewhere around $1000 parts and labour around here.. ($800 US) labour costs seem to vary greatly around N.A.

Steering shaft bushing and seals need replaced. That's a common problem and a source of water intrusion into the upper drive. Like Hystat said... red? Hi Vis Gear Lube is normally a dark yellowish gold or tan in color.

I wonder if someone put transmission fulid in the upper gear box instead of the 90 weight OMC Gear lube.

Before I did anything I would drain the upper gear case and make sure to catch all the fluid. Check for signs of water and fill with the proper OMC Gear lube.

If your do take it in for a reseal make sure they change the water pump just bellow the upper gear case.

in the driveway, with the engine off, yes- In the lake it will take in water in any position and destroy the drive.

check out sterndrive.info for their pricing. He does reseals and repairs for all of North America, and pretty quickly too, using UPS for around $35US shipping. As a matter of fact, alot of dealers in the US take them off your hands for repair, send them to Wayne, then charge you double the price, so you're better off to deal with him direct. I had my whole drive done for $1800CDN including parts and labor within a 24hr period. Of course, that didn't include new gears, they were in great shape still. That's a whole new ball game in pricing if the gears need replacing.
