Last May I purchased my first boat. After having it for a week I decided to take my wife and son out for a late Friday afternoon cruise to try out the new prop and repaired skeg on my boat ( thats another story). As we were coming back into the Marina cruising slowly so I thought through the no wake zone, I noticed a white Crown Victoria on the shore opposite my Marina (James River Marina in Newport News, VA)A guy was standing next to the Crown Vic waving to me. I thought it was one of the Police officers that I know from my gym so I waved back. He waved again and I waved back, my wife thougt he was just being friendly and suggested that we continue to the dock which i did. Once i got to the dock the owner of the Marina came down to tell me that he thought the officer wanted me to come over to him. By this time the Officer had hijacked a Carolina Skiff to bring him across the creek. By the time I was tied up he had made it across, had hauled him self up onto the gas dock and was making his was to me beet red and sweating profusley. This was a local game and inland fisheries officer patroling the water from a car.

He approached me and asked if I noticed his waving me over to him, I replied that it looked as if he was waving to me not at me. He then proceeded to tell me that he was going to write me up for evading an officer of the law and creating a wake in a no wake zone. I asked him why he did not use his siren or bull horn to call me over ..he then decided to only write the wake ticket. He lectured me for 15 minutes on wakes. told me if someone was cooking on their boat with an alchohol stove and I caused it to fall over and the boat burned to a crisp I would be liable. I totally understood and agreed with him except for the fact that everybody who saw what had happened said the wake was barely visible. My wife then decides to engage this guy in a discussion about the proper PFD for my son, who was wearing one at the time. While I am standing there about to blow a fuse they are discussing life jackets for the better part of 20 minutes. After that she walked off and he gave me my ticket. At this point I was so mad i could barely see, I walked up to her and asked why she did not just invite the $#!!#@ over for dinner to which she replied "who"? Turns out she felt she could convince him not to write me up by being nice.

This wound up costing me $200.00

Usually they are less arrogant, this jimbrone sounds like a Barney Fife contest winner. Make sure you let others who boat there to watch this guy. It won't recover your $ loss, but it will impede his ticket writing.

He was upset about the fact that he had to come across the creek after me..I was not creating a perceptable wake

At least up there they use the right term for a no wake zone. Down here they call them manatee zones even where there are no manatees. It's a way for the state to justify no wake zones where they are not necessary. I will be glad when the last manatee dies and we can drive our boats fast once again.

Wake is in the eye of the beholder. No wake zone under the I-90 bridge on Lake Washington is 8mph. Sometimes the Fuzz calls down people exceeding, sometimes not. I assume different cops on duty. They are docked under the bridge but I never see them chase anyone. He uses a bullhorn to warn offenders. I sometimes drop anchor and fish 50 or so yards off the bridge in the east channel, so I see a lot of traffic. Guys that bug me are the ones who floor it just after they pass the bridge and are doing 30 by the time they pass me. Rocks the boat a little.

I hope nobody took my manatee coment too seriously. I enjoy watching the damn things as much as anybody. I just get tired of the term manatee zone being misused instead of no wake zone. Seems like anytime a county commissioner wants to slow down boat traffic in front of his boat dock he has a manatee zone designated. It's kind of obvious when the body of water hasn't been home to a manatee in decades.

We were fishing up on duck harbor small lake in upstate pa, and we were coming trolling back and the motor was real loud AND it was labor day weekend and late at night...

We are zooming back to my dads dock when this powerful searchlight hits us from the access lot, where they were shooting off fireworks before

We dont stop as we think it is some drunks...

A few minutes later a fish and game officer comes roaring down the road onto our property demanding to know who was in the boat and to see the boat.

My brothers said they were in the boat and that they thought it was just some drunks shining a light on them

The officer went down to the dock and gave my dad a fine for "an unnattended fishing rod", my dad had come up from the dock when he pulled into th e property

He did not realize that dad was retired and dad had all the time in the world to fight the fine...
