My paint job is coming off

I painted my boat inside with primer Wednesday and it was around 80 degrees, since that time it has been in about the high 50s. Today is Friday and my paint job is coming off in areas when I bump it with things. The top edge of the boat the primer is solid! On the inside in the bow of the boat I have bumped it a few times with a plastic tube that I use to hold up the tarp. Each time I bumped it the primer came right off to show the smooth aluminum body underneath. I don't know why this is happening... maybe paint coat to thick or not thick enough, could you inform me why? Thank You!

BTW extra information:
I used a paint gun
It rained Thursday morning
The primer I am using is for aluminum
The paint did not run in the area I am talking about

Re: My paint job is coming off

did you wipe it down first, sounds like maybe wax or oil under?? also try letting the paint cure, I like to wait a month if I can, maybe sandable primer

I wiped it down but I didn't spend a lot of time doing that so it's possible that there was oil behind it. I will give it more time. Any ideas what I should do... wipe off the primer that comes off and re-paint after a week?

Paint will not hold to aluminum without the proper prep..
You need to go to the top of this forum and look at the second sticky.. No 10 has in detail how to prep and paint aluminum..

Woodonglass also has some good information on painting aluminum..

What u might try is adding a flex additive anytime u paint fiberglass you have to use it i know your boat is aluminum but it flexes too the additive will help with cracking too

Success in any paint job is ALL about the prep. Aluminum is NO exception and in fact requires some specialized prep. My Paint your boat link below has some good info that will help. Unfortunately you will prolly have to remove what you have done and start over if you want it to adhere properly and last for any length of time.

Re: My paint job is coming off

whether you used an etching primer, and alodyne type product, or an epoxy primer, you needed to use an alumiprep type pruduct 1st, applied wet (follow tech sheet), with a wipe method.

PPG ALUMINUM CLEANER-QUART-DX533-04

You needed to not touch the surface between any steps.

The steps I would use is

Wash with soap/water

scuff the surface lightly

Clean with alumiprep- I use DX533

Rinse with water

Apply an etching primer or Alodyne product- I use DX1791 (2 part waterproof wash primer) or DX503(alodyne).

prep for paint.

PS-you dont need a flex additive, they were generally used for installation of plastic and rubber pruducts during installation, as the flex properties were short lived. The new products are supposed to last longer now, but its still shunned, except for rubber.

Paint curing takes longer in cool temps, thick paint takes even longer.
