mystery electronic component 1983 Johnson 140

I cannot find out what one of the little electric boxes is on my motor. It wires into the terminal blockstrip. the little box is located on the port side of the engine just aft and almost under the flywheel at the top of the engine block. It has a yelow and purple wire going to the terminal strip, where the rectifier and altenator are wired in.

I have the shop manual with wiring diagram from 1978 that is supposed to cover later models. I also have the manual that came with the outboard, but none of them tell me what that little sealed box is for. Is it converting some signal for the tach ?
