Can anyone out there help me figure out what year/horsepower engine I have? The serial/model plate is missing, and the only number on the engine plug is J2645435. The entire motor is painted camo, so there are no identifying markings at all. It looks like a late 60's, early 70's Johnson/Evinrude 18 or 20, but I would like to find out for sure. Thanks!

Hi Hardhead13

Just to let you know we are not ignoring you, but without the model number, it's next to impossible to tell what you've got. There are some folks on here that can narrow it down to within a few years with the serial number, so hang in there and hopefully someone will help you out.

RB- Thanks... Is there any other way to find the model number (other than the missing plate?) I appreciate the reply!

Re: Mystery Johnson

Look for a series of numbers/letters on the freeze plug. That is the serial number.

Re: Mystery Johnson

Unfortunately, there is only the one number on the freeze plug. (One of few I have ever seen this way) There is also a stamped "M" on the plug, possibly aftermarket used in a rebuild? If the other was there, I am sure I could easily find out what I have. Thanks anyway!

From the serial number, I'd guess late '70s. Pull the prop off and give the part number- like 378347 and the diameter and pitch number-like 9X9.
Backfire ;)

It came with no prop! I seem to be striking out all over here! Any other year-specific parts I could check?? Thanks!

Ok, does the prop shaft have a hole in it for a drive pin or is it a splined shaft?
Backfire ;)

Re: Mystery Johnson

My Johnson serial number list ends at 1962 with 2,249,094, Being that yours is only about 400,000 over that (about 2-3 years production in those days) I'd say your motor is right around 1965. In 1965 Johnson made an 18hp and in 1966 they made a 20hp - basically the same 22-cube motor with minor internal differences. You weren't likely to notice the difference in most applications... Your motor should have four small bolts and one large bolt holding the gearcase to the exhaust housing.
1964 was the first year of the low-profile 9.5 (only four bolts holding the gearcase to the exhaust housing), and I don't think anyone would confuse that with an 18hp, and the next size up in that era was the 28/33hp (six small bolts and one large bolt holding the gearcase to the exhaust housing) models in '64 and '65 - again - significantly larger and not easily confused with the 22-cuber.
Hope that helps.
- Scott
