It happened a few 100 yards from our neighbors dock.. It is a shame.. But I have a few questions I would like to get your opinion on..

20 footer 8 people- Overloaded?

30-35mph winds along with boat wakes churning up the Bay contributing factor?

I have a 20 foot bowrider and I get knocked around from time to time on a light wind day.. I would have not been out there..

BERKELEY, N.J. ? Police are investigating a fatal boating accident that killed a 32-year-old Brick Township woman, who was one of a party of eight in a small boat that capsized in Barnegat Bay about 8:20 p.m. Wednesday.

Trooper Sgt. Dave Maruca, assistant division commander of the State Police Point Pleasant Marine Bureau, said the death of Tammy Abrams, 32, of Brick, is being investigated. A total of eight people, including three children were on the boat, which was either an 18- or 20-foot center console vessel.

Maruca said the winds were estimated to be about 30 to 35 miles per hour at the time of the accident. The investigation will include the size of the boat, the weight capacity it was able to hold and the water conditions.

The boat was about 100 yards off Butler Boulevard, when it was hit by two waves which caused it to take on water and overturn, said Lt. Gerald Lewis.

The boat was owned and operated by Joseph Martinez of Toms River, Lewis said.

The group of eight was tossed into the water and were rescued by Harold Fritz, of the Bayville section of Berkeley who used his vessel to rescue the people from the water, Lewis said.

The individuals were taken to shore on Fritz's vessel, Lewis said.

Abrams was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River by the Bayville First Aid Squad. An autopsy will be conducted today.

The investigation could take several days, even months to complete, Maruca said.

It was foolish to take out a fully loaded boat in small craft warnings

It is a maximum capacity much like a tow rateing on a car NOT a safe at all times rateing

Steve, I live across the cove from Butler Blvd. I saw the five police boats two police cars and the fire engine on the scene last night. 8 people (3 were children) in a 20' center console is not excessive. My 21' dual console is rated for 8 adults, and handles them with ease. The wind was not too bad last night either. There were however, a whole lot of boats going to see the fireworks last night. A lot may have been DUI (or boating under the influence). They may have hit some other boat or the jetty at the end of Butler Blvd or they may simply have all leaned over the same gunwale at the same time. The water is not deep there (like most of the bay). she might have been able to stand up. I will guess she couldn't swim or was incompacitated when she was dumped out.
