I've seen a lot of good names for boats around here and thought it might be fun to try to find one for my boat.

Details: Baja SS 164, Johnson VRO 110 O/B, White Gelcoat hull w/Metal Flake Royal Blue stripe running the length of the boat above and below the seam. Interior is Blue carpet, Blue (2 shades) and white vinyl seats and padding, plush.

The boat is built for sunning and skiing, we do some of both and a lot of camping with it. It's in MINT condition. It's fast, it's quick, it strikes without warning. It also gives a heck of a rough ride if there is a lot of wake or wind driven rollers but in the chop or the smooth stuff it flies! My sister and brother-in-law call it the Miami Vice boat because the styling reminds them of the boats in that show. Maybe also because on weekends on the water I'm sporting that 5 O'clock shadow  . We have photos of us in the boat playing like hip hop superstar macs. We play like we're private agents and bounty hunters stalking friends and family up the river. We forget our age and obligations aboard the boat. We playin'!

I have never had serious trouble with this boat, I've never run it aground or had an accident. I feel very safe and comfortable on the water in it. I have no worries out there. I never forgot the plug. I take good care of it. It's efficient and clean. We use it primarily on the WI River from the lake to as far North as WI Dells, I take it to the Madison chain as well. We've found our way home in the dark plenty of times including the first time on the Fourth of July with everyone along the shores of the river launching rockets and flares overhead. I felt nothing short of awe that night to be out skimming across the dark deep Earth guided by the light of our celebration of independance.

We live and keep the Baja on Sticky Bay, our home is called North Savannah. My wife and I are nature lovers down to our very souls. We try to live the sustainable life. We keep the funk. We are modern Robinhoods. We waste not. We live to love. We are heirs to many cultures.

Not too many small boats around here have names. Mine has never been named but I feel she deserves a proper name as she has passed all the tests and delivers me safely wherever I want to go.

What the...? That's a very unusual post. It's like a walk through la-la-land... How's the work in your greenhouse going? It appears to be harvest time! Nature lovers to the soul running a 2 stroke outboard... ? Uh-hu.

Re: Name for my Baja?

What's wrong with "Calico Kid" or "Miami Vice"? Or maybe "Milwaukee Vice"?
Naming a boat is a very personal thing. It's like naming a child. My only suggestion is to keep it simple. I've seen lots of boats with names in different languages, some rather obscure like Latin or Gaelic. If you want it to be a private thing, that only a few people "get", that's fine.
If you want wider recognition, keep it simple, and generally speaking, in English. Try hard not to be too cute , I dislike really cutsie names. But that's me, like I said, it's really personal. ;)

Re: Name for my Baja?

Upon further thought, it's even more difficult than naming a child.
Howzabout "Nature boy" or "Mr. Natural"?
Men's names don't look right on a small craft. They belong on something like a freighter or aircraft carrier.
Electric Blue? Fuse Box? Shock Wave? Sparky? I used to know a plumber who had a big cruiser called "Pipe Dream".
"Miss" something? "Lady" something? "Pride of" or "Spirit of" something or somewhere? You mentioned Robin Hood - "Maid Marion"? "Free Spirit"?
Short and simple is best [especially on a small boat or you'll run out of room!], nothing too formal, or weighty. The Royal Navy had a lot of great names -Warspite, Ark Royal, Indefatigable, Royal Sovereign - but they'd look funny on a 16' boat.
Female names are always good, two are sometimes even better - Annie May [my grandma], Sweet Marie, Blue Dahlia, Gloria [Jean], Norma Jean, Breezy, Marie Claire, Rose Marie, Miss Vicky, Mary Rose [Henry the 8th's flagship] Bettie Paige [after the famous pin-up queen], etc..

Names of old songs - "Satin Doll", "Summer Wind", "Witchcraft", "Ramblin' Man", "Ramblin' Rose", "Superstition", "Blue Train", "Kind'a Blue", "Nice 'n' Easy", etc..

Things with blue in the name: Bluebird, Bluejay, Bluebell [or Blue Belle], Blue Monday, Blue's Chaser, Royal Blue, Baby Blue, Blue Too, True Blue, Code Blue, Blue Goose, Sky Blue, or Blue Sky, Blue Haze, etc..

Avoid puns ["Loon-a-tic"] and rude sayings, you'll regret it. There was a fellow around here who had this beautiful 30 foot mahogany speedboat made for him. Must have cost a fortune. What did he name it? "Pissed Off". Ugh. :(

Me, I called my boat the "You Too".

Good one. Despite popular opinion, flattery will get you many places.
Using the wife's name works if it's a nice name, but suppose it's Ethel or Hilda or Gertrude? Fine names in and of themselves, but I would't want to ride around in a boat named Myrtle Ann, or Georgette Mary. :p

Re: Name for my Baja?

Magster65, why would you say something like that? You must be a mean drunk! :p Thanks for ideas the rest of you. I would like to leave my occupation on the shore and so will not include any electrician puns, but thanks! (Well, "Electric Blue" is pretty neat!) I like many of the ideas here, but who the heck would put cheese on a boat? ("Bleu Cheese"???) I like the others though, L.D., Thanks. I like the references to the planet, maybe "Blue Planet"? I agree that nasty names like "Pissed Off" get a boat no admiration, and that if 99% of people can't understand it it's probably not worth putting on the boat. I've been thinking of "STUNNER", my wife likes it allright too. Sound OK?

Is it customary on boats to put a port name with the title? How does that work?

Mattttttttt25, Madelyn Rose is a great name for a daughter and a boat! (You post Pirate :p !)

Magster, I'm just teasing you, my original post is representative of our time spent in the water, bobbin' and weavin'! When I'm reminded of the boat (drying out in the garage for the winter), I think of all that goofing off, thought it would help in naming her.

Thanks again everyone!
CalicoKid

Re: Name for my Baja?

 hehehe I'm not mean (sober or liquored), I am overly sarcastic at times. No offense meant. I tried to write like that original post in high school but I could never get the thoughts onto paper. Maybe I was having the 'flashback'! As for your boat name. You spend time just roving around (like we do) and have the same feeling as we do while we're out in ours. Name it for what it is... how about 'Freedom' or 'Boundless'? We're expecting a baby in Feb. so I understand the importance of choosing a name :) I like coupe's way of thinkin. 'Ramblin' man', when I thought it I immediately had the song 'in my head'. That's neat. Good Luck!
