Hey guys, first post here and great site by the way!

I just purchased a 1982 Renken 17' Bowrider with the 3.0L Mercruiser and Alpha 1 outdrive. The engine has been rebuilt and has less than 30 hours on it, and runs great. The only thing about it is that the starter makes a strange noise after I start it up. It almost sounds as if the bendix (I think that's what its called) stays engaged too long causing the starter to keep spooling up after it has retracted. Below is a link to a youtube video of me starting the engine. You have to listen kind of hard right after it fires up from the first start, but you can hear the ZIP from the starter.

What causes this? Bad solenoid? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Also...what RPM should these engines idle at? Mine seems awfully high.

Maybe I'm going deaf, but it sounds o/k to me.

A spray of inox or WD40 (or similar) on the drive shaft won't go amiss, can't hurt.

I did not watch your video, but if you hear the starter still engaged for a while thats not good. I would not run the engine and pull the starter. You can then disassemble the starter and clean and lube it.
If it's hainging up you will grind the teeth off your flywheel and it's much easier to change a starter than the flywheel.
