Re: NASCAR Drivers

NASCAR? I dont mean any disrespect, but how hard can it be to drive a car around and oval? Never understood driving a car around in circles for 175-300 laps, just to see who could do it faster.

I am in to moto-x, those guys are racers. Putting a bike up in the air 30-40 ft and landing it, or throwing the bike out in front of you while in the air, and pulling it back just before you hit the ground. I use to race bikes when I was younger, and it is a real rush being that high up.

Re: NASCAR Drivers

I am an "ex-MXer", and have been there, done that.
It is real racing, as you say, but the major air, is not racing. It's "swell"--It's style. It's grace, agility, tallent, and gutsy..But it aint racin. Sorry. Freestyle is one thing, racing is another. Racing is "start-to-finish, who does it first", and that's it,in it's most basic form. Sure, every type and class of racing has different rules, but when all is qualified and disqualified, it all boils-down to that.
NASCAR is a fantastic sport, that is in a state of flux right now. It stands ballanced upon the fence of popularity, and can easily be toppled by thier own rule-fabrication practices.
Yuo wanna see a real race? Go to the nearest short track, and sit-thru the fist race.
You may waste your 15 buks, or you may get hooked.

Old timer here.

Drove NASCAR, SCCA, IKF and OSCRA back in the 50s and early 60s.

I favor guys I got whipped by. Lee and Richard Petty, Junior Johnson, Phil Hill, Carrol Shelby, Dan Gurney and, most of all, that family of gentlemen named Unser.

Greatest driver I ever saw? Jerry Unser or Mario Andretti.

Greatest sportsman and gentleman I ever saw race? Al Unser, Jr.

Wisconsin is chest deep in racing. Its everywhere here, and a lot of the greats have roots here, or raced here for a year or two on their way up.
Longest continuously used race track in the world, 100 years, The Milwaukee Mile. Road America, Aztalan, Kaukauna, Rapids, Oregon, Slinger, Union Grove, Hales Corners, MonsterHall, plus about 50 more local tracks.
Unsers, Kulwicki, Kenseth, Musgrave, D*ck Trickle, Marcis, Schrader, Stewart, Hanson, Menard, the 4 Sauters, plus lots more.

I like the drivers that race HARD and Agressive, but clean, and admit when they screwed up.
I won't name them here, cause it will only start an argument.

Re: NASCAR Drivers

if they moved all restrictions to the exhaust system, and they were somewhere between a sewing machine & a harley, i could stand to be a spectator. i burnt out after 2 visits. :)

can't say the same for some of my relatives. i have no doubt that they are some finely tuned athletes though. i do watch on tv sometimes. i really like the engineering of the racecars, just can't handle the sound.

the only racer that stands out in my mind is Cotton Perry, a Gatornationals drag racer from my hometown. he tricked up the carb on my old mustang, and let me use his garage/tools to fix it when i couldn't afford to pay a wrench.

My drivers are....in no particular order:

Mikey Waltrip
Dale Jr.
Terry Labonti

Glad to see Terry L. finishing better. He's a gentlman and very gracious. His feathers didn't hardly get ruffled when Dale Sr. spun him out on the last lap of the night race at Bristol some years back.

Re: NASCAR Drivers

I tend to think that ex-open wheel drivers are probably better/cleaner drives. No bumping and grinding in those classes or you are out by attrision. Some of the big name NASCAR drivers could probably never have make it in open wheel cause they wouldn't have a car left after 50 laps. The big and little E come to mind. I enjoy watch sprint cars and respect anyone who can handle one of those rockets on wheels. They are probably the most physically and mentally demanding cars to race.

Re: NASCAR Drivers

I'm not a Mark Martin fan myself but my brother-in-law who passed away at age 40 was. He was so much of a fan, he was buried wearing his Mark Martin leather jacket.

I guess the only drivers I actually met was AJ Foyt and Danny Sullivan. A past boss of mine sponsored him for the "Greer Special" back in the mid eighties. He was also A.J.'s Godfather.

I don't watch NASCAR as a rule (makes me dizzy)

but I used to go the the Stock Car Races as a kid with the family and really enjoyed it.

Re: NASCAR Drivers

I like the Labontes cause their from Texas, Darrell Jarett cause I WANNA DROVE THE TRUCK and Elliot Sadler because he HAD my number. I say my number, 21, I have used it for 3 years now. You got it 12 footer, I race them little bullrings. There isn't anything as fun as turning left on dirt while running 80 miles an hour and knowing that it will turn.

NASCAR is the WWF of motor sports. F1 is real racing, WRC is real racing, lawn mower racing is real racing. NASCAR? Well, to each his own :)
SoulWinner

Re: NASCAR Drivers

Please remember that I'm just the messenger here. Years ago, Sports Illustrated sent a reporter to cover his first stock car race. His story opened with " The crowd was full of profane, drunk, fighting, screaming fans. And, as if that wasn't enough, there were their husbands...".
