Re: Natural disasters.

we have boxing day here in canada too.... must be a commonwealth thing that you just haven't gotten over down under ;) You are a republic now, right? It's the busiest shopping day of the year. Before x-mas, most the stores post signs at their till's, "no returns/exchanges during boxing week" That's cause they don't want to be bogged down by returns during their big sale.

We also have the boxing day sales, can get some good bargains!

No, we are not a republic, there was a referendum a few years ago and it was voted down. Still with Queen Lizzy. (I think that makes us a Monarchy?).

JB,

Nationalizing the events is somewhat baiting.

My persoanal views.

1. We (maybe) have seen this before, just not recorded. The arrogancy, of the human race, to actually change world climate is at best, arrogant. We're known for that.

2. I was always taught tht we're going to have another ice age. Which is it?

Basically, we have recorded weather for a litle over 100 years. In the scheme of the age of the earth, we HAVE NO CLUE.

Give us another Krakatoa, Mt. St. Helens, Pinatubo, etc., and ALL bets are OFF.

We are arrogant.

Recently in the UK we have had Tornados, a Hurricane, Earthquakes. None of which were very bad, I seem to remember a few people killed durring the hurricane.
The worst problem, and it seems to be happening more and more is flash flooding, there have been a number of very bad floods in the past few years with quite a few deaths.

The day after christmas was the day when the church opened its "poor boxes" and the money was handed out to the poor of the parish.

WE all have a perspective of what? 50 years, at Max.?

The human race is good at crying "wolf" when we have NO idea of the real aspect of the evolution of the rock we live on.

Just because we might not like what is happening, believing we can change it is like shooting pebbles at a volcano.

Re: Natural disasters.

The earth is a complex living entity. The species of various lifeforms on this planet have always lived in balance. These species have always been kept in check through disease, predation, and natural selection. There is only one species of life on this planet that has grown out of control, and is not being kept in check. That species is us. Whether you belive God will do it, or Nature will do it, we will be brought back into check, that is how it has been done as long as this planet has existed. Like DJ said, it will happen, there is nothing we can do about it, thats just how life is.

I think the planet is just going through its natural climate cycles. I don't think, despite what some may say, that we are affecting the climate that much. We are affecting the planest resources, but I think the climate would still be doing this even if we were still riding horses. These climate changes are how the planet regulates species population, killing off or thinning species that can't handle the change. Our technology helps us a bit, but I think we all know we will have a few less neighbors after the next mini ice age or the next 5 degree temp increase. Just thinning the herd....

No ulterior motive here, DJ.

I was cogitating on Texas tornados, Florida and Gulf Coast hurricanes, California earthquakes, mudslides and wildfires, etc. and it seemed to me that different locations on earth present different risks.

I wanted some folks to tell me about the risks where they live.

That's all. No thoughts about interfering with nature any more than we already do.

JB
here is a good article on pollution.
http://www.enviroliteracy.org/article.php/578.html

while the succesor was bad it would be worse if coal fired steam and gasoline auto's had not been developed. a neighbor of mine was whining about how we should all burn wood for heat, I almost died laughing at the absurdity of it. while heating with wood will work ok in largly rural areas, can you imagine the soot and smoke if a major city heated with wood in each home and busness?
we may have a minor affect on the immediate environment its mostly no permanant and not as great as nature has occasionally. I just hope I am long gone for the next "super" natural event.but I guess them good old days maybe were not so good :) :)

Just remember, JB - when promulgating your esoteric cogitations, be physiologicaly and psychologicaly inclined to make you conclusions monumental. ;)
