For years I have battled with the system of lifting the motor on a 25hp, 2-stroke Merc when I want to go into the shallows, and reaching over the side of the boat, behind the motor to release the catch is tough. So I got to thinking and came up with a idea that works, and works VERY well......and makes the whole job TONS easier. Very easy and cheap to make.

Lift the motor and tie a string around the "jaws" that catch the tilt pin.

Run the string between the motor and transom and tie a washer to the end.

When your in the boat, simply pull the string and it releases the catch, lift the motor...that easy, no more reaching over the back of boat, and having to reach back up and grab the motor to lift it. Try it and post what you think.

Looks like a really cool mod to me, Will.

That is a good idea. I took the time to shorten the wire linkage to the jaws and adjusted it so that they are released in the neutral position. Took a bit of time to get it set so it was unlocked in neutral, but still locked in reverse. Your idea sounds much simpler.

The jaws lock in neutral so that when you pull the starter rope the engine doesn't kick up in your face... If you want an even easier way to release the lock, put the engine in forward gear... That is how the designer planned it to be done.... as stated in the user guide....

Yes, I hear you. It also starts to tilt under sudden deceleration. The string is a better idea.
