Necessary to use gasket sealer on impeller gaskets?

I have replaced the impeller on my Alpha 1 Gen 2 outdrive a couple of times. The manual says use Perfect Seal gasket sealer on the two impeller housing gaskets. I have the equivalent Permatex Aviation gasket sealer that is applied with a brush, but I think that would make a mess and get sealer in with the impeller. I have used a spray High Tack gasket sealer that puts on an even coat and is easier to apply.

My question is, do the impeller gaskets need any sealer? What can happen if the water pump housing leaks?

Thanks- Dshow

When on plane, a leak can cause the pump to suck air and push that air through the cooling system causing a high speed overheat.
I use smaller acid brushes and not that big fat brush that comes in the can.

I always used the OMC/BRP Stuff in the can with the brush for doing my Cobra...the seals have to seal well to keep from sucking air as noted...and that stuff stays tacky so the bolts come out even after a season in salt water.
