Hi All. I am pretty sure my starter is fried. It wouldnt turn the engine over so i pulled it apart. Looks to me like the wires that wrap around the magnet in there may have had it. They arent melted, but the coating seems to have gone away. All the ones I have found are crazy expensive, except this one on ebay.

Can any of yall tell me if this starter will work? I may take the old one to the rebuild shop to see what he says.

So I took the starter apart and took it down to the local starter guy. He said there is nothing wring with it. I got back home, put it all back together and it still wont turn over. It just barely moves the flywheel. SO, I tried turning the flywheel with my hands. and man is it hard to turn. And sounds like rubber is rubbing and keeping the engine from turning down towards the foot(impeller).

Now I put a new impeller in this thing back in 2008, and have only used the boat 3 times since then. Is it possible for an impeller to keep the engine from turning over with the starter? Could the rubber have hardened while sitting in the garage enough to make it not turn over. I remember when I put the new impeller in it was very tight the, but the engine still turned over well, and it pumped good water. Any ideas? Im thinking about pulling it apart, or possibly trying to spray some kind of lube in there to lube the thing up to see if that frees it up. Hmm

Take the plugs out and try it. Squirt some 2 stoke oil in the plug holes to see if it turns easier. Don't be so quick to blame the impeller.
