I have a 1996 30 hrse johnson tiller with electric start the first problem is the starter seems very slow even with a new battery, may get one start off it then it's like the starter doesn't have enough to push flywheel then i have to pull start. Does it seem like the starter needs to be rebuilt or replaced?

check all the connectios to ground, the starter solonoid .If that seems ok,you can jump a positive lead directly to the positive lug on the starter,if its still slow, and your sure the ground is ok,its likely a problem in the starter,if it spins normal when jumping ,you may have a burned cable ,inspect the full length of the battery cables, oftn they can get cut where they lie in hull etc, over time the copper will corrode and the smaller corroded cable wont carry enough amperage,I would always suspet connections or the cables before the starter

then your starter needs work, you can try pulling it apat yourself ,you might have a hung up brush, there was a company that sold the brush cap ,but its been a while,a starter/alternator shop should be able to help,or go used on ebay

I'm sure that you have a shop close that can clean it up or rebuild it for far less than a new starter.

Agree with that. There is a little shop near me that will re-build any starter, alternator or dynamo. Guarantees his work and is reasonably priced.
