I am looking to upgrade my heat pump/air conditioner thermostat to the digital age.

At the same time I want a little more control.

I want to be able to lock out the heat strips or at least adjust the temperature at witch the heat strips kick in.

Any suggestions?

Ken

You will need a simple 2-stage digital stat for what you want. Are you planning on wiring this yourself or are you going to hire someone to set it up?

Re: Need a Heat Pump Thermostat

I am a I am a DIY guy, that way when it breaks, I can fix it.

My uncle is a A/C guy so he can set me up with any parts.

Also, I dont really need a programmable stat as there are people home at all hours of the day.

Would it be easier to run two seperate stats. One for the A/c & heat pump and another for the heat strips? Will the heat pump de-ice cycle still work properly?

Ken

You'd also need to add a separate relay/seqencer for the emergency heat strips along with the separate thermostat.Unlike conventional electric heat system your existing T/stat enrgizes the compressor contactor and reversing valve solenoid on the outdoor unit in heat mode.

You wouldn't be concerned about the de-ice feature of the outdoor coil in heat mode, since you're trying to operate the heat strips independantly. The de-ice feature is thermostatically/pressure switch controlled from the outdoor unit controls and utilizes a hot gas bypass feature.
