Need a new starter...where can I find one?

Hey all, my starter is bad. I have to bang it with a wrench to make it crank. Not good when you have a leaky boat. <br /><br />Can anyone point me to where I can find an application guide to find the part number I need. I can't afford Genuine Merc.<br /><br />My boat has a 1984 Mercruiser 185 Engine.<br /><br />Thanks,<br />Trent

Trent, Around here automotive parts places carry rebuilt marine starters and alternators. They have the application listing. You will need to know what GM, Mercruiser or Ford block yours is. I would price one from them. Also, the marine stores like West Marine and BoatUS also cary them. I am not familar with your motor, but BoatUS quotes a new marine starter for Mercruiser four cylinder motors for <$150.<br /><br />If yours works with a bang of the wrench, why not disassemble and clean it up. It may work!

I just replaced the starter in my 1995 3.0LX Merc. I got one off Ebay and it fit perfectly and works perfectly. Find out the part # for your particular model and do a search. I would advise against getting a starter that is not marine-grade.

Before I changed the starter for the problem you stated I would go get some new brushes or at least check the brushes. Last time I replaced mine cost was under $5.00. I Would also check the contacts in the starter solneoid. Some times they can be cleaned and rotated and sometimes they need replaced but again very cheap. While you have the starter off clean and lube the bendix.

check overtons.com, and boatus.<br /><br />I was able to get a brand new starter from overtons for my mercruiser 233.
