I was wondering if anyone has a 75 Chrysler 55hp (or any models similar) that still has an original clean cowl. I am repainting my motor and the cowl is the worn out bad, to the point where I cant tell what original colors there were and or any emblems. Would like to see a picture of a really clean one for reference when I paint it.

These are various years from 1967, 1980, and 1982. Unfortunately I do not have any 1975.

However, if it was similar to the 1967(fourth photo), it would have a metal trim stripe down the center, electric blue numbers on a flat black background, and cream and light metallic brown paint."Chrysler" would be plastic and the Horsepower would be a metal plate with an insert.

In later years the got rid of all the metal, replaced the center stripe with plastic, and used decals over the Chrysler white paint. Hope that helps some.

Now, Here is how I restore them!

This 55 cowl was on my 1970 35 HP Chrysler when I purchased from PO in 1985.

Re: Need a picture for restoration reference

Frank, thanks for the info on plates and decals. The decals are in good enough shape that If I clean them up I could make them look good. None of those motors was the actual one I have however, that Picture with the mural on the motor looks really cool. Would love to do something like that but do not have the time.

Wickware has the same cowl as mine. Question is what color paint is the stripe. Mine looks as if it was some type of gold. But your pick kinda makes it look like an orange (hard to tell) I see lots of spots in it of white on mine and cant tell ifs its a metallic flake of some sort like you said, or if it just faded bad and was originally a nice solid color.

We took on a project while I wait for my lower unit parts to come in. Replaced the carpet throughout and are adding a few goodies along the way, hopefully a tach and temp gauge and or speedo will come along as well. Only so much I can do to my 78 Loweline alum.

I did not see any matalic in my old cover but there might be some on Ebay with better defined colors. I saw one 55 HP cover that was sharp with more blue that I felt was newer. jow

It is a slightly golden light brown metallic but NOT metalflake. In those days they did not have clearcoat so the paint tended to wear off with sun, damage, and waxing.

These are a couple of different hoods so you can see the range that Chrysler used. As you can also see, they used many different design schemes

Yeah, I know: I have a lot of stuff.

Re: Need a picture for restoration reference

SP: That cowl also looks some what similar to mine and gives a good reference bc its size. Im starting to think I might do a nice bright Gold and White or maybe completely change it to something new. I just would like to try and keep the vintage look. Any ideas of something that wont take too much time/money. It is just a cowl after all :).

Frank: Having a lot of stuff is never a bad thing as long as theres room for it all :). I wish I had extra parts lying around. Im hunting for a scrap motor to get some various parts build up going. After dropping my LU down, I learned a thing or two about these motors. Now I am anxious to want more! Hope thats normal haha
