I have a 28 foot, 1974 Uniflite with twin 318's the same vintage.
The port motor is tired... I want to purchase a long block and have that motor pulled, stripped and have the new long block equipped and dropped in place.
I dock the boat in the Highlands area, the mechanic at my marina... I just don't trust so much. Nice enough guy, his skill set and knowledge are limited and they estimate jobs to take 2 weeks... 3 months later, I'm still waiting.
I've called around and other marinas won't touch her because it's an old Chrysler 318? They are telling me "Our mechanics are only Yamaha or Mercury or Volvo or Johnson Certified" or "that motor is too old". Seriously? I get the vision of a 22 year old wannabe mechanic, with his finger up his nose.
If boat hauling wasn't so darn much, if I had a lift and if I had the space at my new home, I'd do the swap myself. This motor isn't rocket science! I need a good old mechanic who knows his sh*t.
I'm asking for a recommendation for a marine mechanic in NJ or NY who can handle this job. She is still in the water so I can cruise her to any marina. I would like to purchase the long block from Rapido, have it shipped to the mechanic and have him perform the work.
Thanks for your input.
