Need a winch

I need a winch for my trailer. It pulls a 21' sea ray. I was looking at a 2600lb two speed winch from Fulton. I know it's overkill, but a broken winch is a bit of a big deal!!

Anyway, I can't find any mention of a lock to keep the boat from sliding back. Is this standard on winches? Does this one have it? Is there a better winch to pruchase?

All winches have the one way rachets to prevent reverse travel.
It is so standard, it goes without mentioning.
That winch looks like overkill. I would buy it! :D

Do not rely on the winch to keep the boat from sliding back.
A safety chain on the bow eye is in your best interest for that!

Yup. UncleWillie has it right.

I suggest putting a turnbuckle in the safety chain so you can really secure the bow to the trailer.

Nothing wrong with going bit more than you need. I have the same winch on my trailer ( it came with it) and I'll never say it was a bad idea. Sure makes things easy when you really need the extra grunt power. My boat is just a 19' center console.

#2600 is the rating when using low speed 12.2:1. At that rate of retrieval, it will take you all day to get the boat on the trailer.
You also have to take into account the small print on the bottom of the winch specifications.
All Fulton brand winches are rated on the first layer of recommended rope, strap, or cable. The winch load capacity must be derated as additional layers are used. Derate the capacity 10% per additional layer of rope, strap, or cable.
You want two or three wraps on the spool at all times for safety purposes so you are down 30% before you even start.

It will work, but it is certainly not ?over kill? by any stretch of the imagination
