Need advice from the experienced

Hello everyone, I was just willed a 16.5 foot Starline Sierra ski boat with a 100 HP Evinrude outboard. Does anyone have any info on this boat? I am VERY new to boats and need to ask some very basic questions. First is the Evinrude XP a 2 stroke or four stroke, I noticed that it has a large oil tank in the rear of the boat. Does this mean it mixes its own oil? Is this a good strong engine? I will be starting the boat for the first time with muffs in the next couple of days and I wanna make sure I dont fry the motor. Also on the boat control below the throttle lever but above the key there is a small black unlabeled knob. Is this a ckoke, if so which way do I turn it to turn the choke up or down? Dont worry Im gonna take a squadron course below I hit the water but want to get the boat seaworthy before summer. Thanks for any help provided.

model # of the motor, to give correct advice. if the knob turns, it is a throttle tension screw, not the choke, if it is a push button, it possibly the choke.

Don't feel bad, there is alot to learn when you start boating, I wish i had know about this site when I started.

Yes the knob on the control box is a tension adjustment for the throttle lever.

turn the key on but not to where it starts and push it in, you should hear a the choke click and there may be a lever on top of the control box to increase timing on start up, if there is no lever then there should be a button on the pivot point of the throttle that you push in, this disengages the shift, again to advance the timing.

A note, the choke is only on if you have the key pushed in, as soon as you release the key it comes off, generally I don't hold the key for long, hold it on till it starts and then bump it now and then to keep the engine running, and be careful not to advance the timing too much as it races the engine, if ti runs too fast either push the lever down abit or pull back the throttle.

It could also have a primer instead of a choke and I have never delt with one of those.

Oh yea maybe get her up to 40-45.

You want to check compression but after you run it 10 minutes or so and make sure you always run the motor with water going to the drive.

Never start it with out water going to it.

You have a inboard or external gas tanks??

How long has it been sitting?

Got any papers with it when thing were done to the motor and such?

Maybe you can post a pic of the motor with the cowl off.

Are you good with tools maybe a wrencher yourself?

This is what i would do.

I would change out the t-stat before i ever ran it first thing, run it, with water going to it, then compression check it.

Look at the plugs good what do you see?

I would also change out the impeller, probably needs it anyway.

I would not use the oil injector if it has one instead mix the gas and oil together, and use only fresh clean gas.

Seen to many boat motors messed up cause the injector quit.

But that me and what i would do.

I would make sure the bilge pump is working good, lights good, and get all the cg equipment that is required.

Than check the trailer bearings, lights on the trailer etc.

I would take the boat over and get it inspected, by the cg and they will look it over and tell you what else you might need, costs nothing and they love to help out new boaters.
