Please help I need some advice on getting the oil seal out, it's the one on the drive shaft under the water pump, I've had this motor for over 20 yrs. and used it every year and never had to replace the water pump, so I pulled the lower unit, hard to believe but the impeller looks like new, but I am getting some water in the oil I think its a bad seal. Thanks You guys are awsome

Best way to get that out is with a seal puller - a hook-like tool you can get at an auto parts store. But are you sure that's the one that's leaking? Could be the shift rod seal or the prop shaft seal. Those require different tools for removal. While in there, change that impeller!

Yea, shift rod seal is a common problem. After all, they don't have any compression springs on them. Sometimes, a light tap on the retainer bushing will tighten them up.

What i would do is drill 3-4 holes through the middle of the side of the seal then screw some phillips screws in. Once they bottom out they will pull the seal up and out. You should feel the drill drop through the seal, they are a bit tough, then you know when to stop drilling. If its anything like my 18hp fastwin it will only have 1 seal for the driveshaft, i replaced this with 2 seals, the first installed the normal way and a 2nd upsidown.
