I am new to the forum and apperciate all the info here. I am looking to purchase my first big boat for use on a large lake (Flathead) in Montana next season. I thought this might be the time of year to start looking for people wanting out of their boats. I like aluminum boats and ran across the following described boat:

"1992 21' Lund Baron...1991 Shorelander Trailer....1991 175hp Johnson...15hp Sea horse kicker motor....1/2 cover ....full cover...traveling cover...motor covers....2 Penn 825 electric down riggers ....Depth finder...fish finder...Icom VHF Marine radios...Garmin GPS 72...anchor..new extra prop" Price ~$17K

I looked on NADA and if the boat and engine are good this is not out of the ball park price wise. My question is what should I be looking for when inspecting this old of boat/engine as far as hidden defects etc. Thanks for any insight.

Re: Need Advice on 92 Lund Baron

I have a 94 Lund Baron and I love it. Used to use it on Lake Michigan but I have moved to Baltimore area and I use it regularly on the Chesapeake Bay. If it has the original motor 200 HP Merc EFI make sure that the upper cylinders are getting good fuel flow. The fuel/water separator lines are 90 deg. and add a little resistance to your fuel flow, might want to look into changing this. Also make sure and get the injectors cleaned, this will help ensure you are getting fuel and lube to all cylinders. I had a piston break apart and needed to rebuild my motor recently. The marina I took it to said it was junk and wanted me to pay $6,500 for a new powerhead. I ripped it the motor apart and fixed it using youtube. As far as the boat goes, it is awesome. I have been in some pretty heavy water and the boat handled it like a champ! This boat is a real Cadillac in my opinion.

Thanks for the input. The boat has been a craigslist for awhile so hopefully the guy will deal. The current engine is a 1991 Johnson 180HP. I have not physically checked it out yet, but plan to next week.

I'm thinking a test drive is in order if truely interested. Walk around in it and look for soft spots in the decking. Looks like a fair price for my area with all that's included and everything works as it should.
