Hi to all,
I haven't posted in a while and figured I was boatless for too long. Picked up a small skiff with a 1985 20 hp Evinrude on it with a 1997 lower unit. Pulled the prop and past the thrust washer I found one oil seal in backwards and the second one jammed in backwards too. Got the first one out, bought the new ones, Can not figure out how I should go about pulling that second jammed one out. Can the propshaft be pulled with out dropping lower unit? Thanks! Pics of my situation and the first seal I was able to pull out.

The bearing carrier really needs to come out unless you can fashion a tool to grab the lip of the seal.....you appear to have removed the two bolts already. Prop shaft wont budge without some disassembly. Are you sure the seals were installed incorrectly? Inner seal (oil side) goes in the coventional way, outer seal (water side) goes in reversed so the two sealing lips end up together.....just asking.

Maybe this would work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcxDyObTqfU

I've tried that technique on upper seals, just to see if it worked. It did. My next project will be to use the same technique to pull out the prop shaft seals without removing the bearing carrier or any other LU disassembly.

Thanks! I had already found that video and believe it may be the best way to go.

I'd be a little wary of stray metal particles that may fall inside using the method.....a greased up drill bit might solve that though.

The best and safest way is to pull off the bearing housing but do NOT pull out the prop shaft!!!!!!!!!
You may get the seals out the You-Tube way, however you need to get the new ones safely and correctly back again.

Update- This unit appears to be too small, (small seals) to do it the "You Tube " way. This statement actually means I tried it and really *&#$ it up......... Nothing left to do now but make the sign of the cross over it and sheepishly take it over to the outboard shop..... hard lesson learned,, try to save a buck, end up costing more anyway.. I can't even imagine how much now. Thanks everyone anyway.. I knew there was a reason I didn't have a boat for a while....

I've done that trick on the big mtrs but never tried it on the small ones. Glad I didn't.
