I have a new to me 1972 Starcraft popup camper and need to paint the top of it.
My questions are:

Is white better than silver for reflecting the sun?

And what type or kind of paint should I use? It will be outside year long.

TIA,
Eric

if you are sealing it I would use the white cool seal stuff. I did both my old campers with it and they never leaked when I got done.

Hi Eric, What I understand about which one is best is this. White will defract the sun light rays breaking them up. Silver reflects but allows the suns rays that generates heat to be absorbed. White looks better IMO......SS

I have also used Cool Seal, its a white rubberized coating and works great to seal the roof and keep it cool.It lasts longer than paint and will actually expand and contract with temp changes and keep any leaks from forming..;)
You put it on with a thick paint roller, very easy!

Hilarious..... absolutely hilarious.

I had a 1979 Starcraft camper -- kind of a white/off white, with the ever attractive brown stone gard, with an orange stripe. I 'inherited' it from my folks when they bought their new camper. It wasn't in BAD shape, but it did need paint too.

I used the cool seal white stuff -- it worked perfect. There was a leak before, but after it was painted, wah-lah -- no more leaky. Then, I fixed the rotted boards on the side of the roof, we wall-papered the ceiling with that textured wall-paper, looked like it came from the factory that way, worked perfect.

I remember back on those days fondly -- went from a tent to a pop-up, and had the world by the tail. We thought it was the best set-up ever. Until we bought our travel trailer. :D

I hear you, Gary....

My story actually continues -- I then sold my pop-up, just after replacing my cables that raise/lower the roof. See, my Grandma has had this idea of camping for years, bought an old one , about 10 years newer than my Grandpa. :D

After two weeks of camping, decided it wasn't for her. Then, I bought it from her for what she paid for it (which was wayyyy too much). It was a great deal, except the roof leaked, the air conditioning didn't work, the water heater didn't work, the oven didn't work, the plumbing leaked, and it looked like it came right outta the 40s.

Wonderful.

Then, my folks decided to trade theirs in (2001 Jayco) for a new outback in 2006. So, I found out what they were going to give my dad for his, paid him that much, and told them to trade in my 'termite mansion on wheels.' He got a good deal, I got a great deal. I'll never forget taking that thing to the dealership... it sat for YEARS in the same spot. Tires were shot, but I only had 6 miles to go. As I'm driving down the road, my daughter said, "Daddy, if it falls off, just keep going." The look on the salesman's face when I pulled it onto the lot was priceless. He smiled as he recognized the truck, but then I pulled into the clearing a little further ahead, and his smile turned into a face of disappointment... the kind your wife has on your wedding night.

Fast forward to today -- We've had the OLD 2001 jayco for a few years now, and we're outgrowing it. We've thought about buying a new travel trailer, but my folks are at a point where they want to do something different too (actually tonight!).... So, here we go again! I'm going to buy his 2007 Outback, ditch ours, and let him buy another one again. He doesn't get the big hit from the dealer for a trade, I don't have to pay sales tax, because we purchased and sold it from father to son..... I think I make out like a bandit!!!

Well I drove the 60 miles and got the Kool Seal. Thanks guys!

One more question, the foam was wet in and area of 77" long by 22" wide. I went to Home Depot and got some foam, but I can't get it to stay up. I've tried liquid nail, 3M 77 spray glue and it won't stay up. What adhesive should I use to get this to stay up? It needs to dry fast.

We use some stuff at work called 3M Hi-Bond,its a spray and will hold anything. Not sure where they order it from.We use it on the inside of trailers when we do custom work.It holds carpet really well and we even have used it to hold diamond tread aluminum panels to the walls.
You might Google it and see if its available online.
You would think liquid nails would have held..

If all else fails, you can drill holes and bolt it on! :D

... or do what I did with a headliner ... staple it up! Still working 10 years later! :D

Thanks for the link Gary.

Aspeck, It might come down to that!!

I'm trying liquid nails again, this time I took some 2x4's and used them to support the foam.
