Need advice on Painting the Outdrive, OD

I removed the OD to change the shift cable and thought that while I have it off I can paint it. I sanded and sanded but the paint still has many spots where the paint has chipped off. Even with sanding and a coat of primer they show through.

I can use a wire brush connected to my drill and use finer and finer brushes or sanding disks

OR use a paint striping chemical

Any suggestions?

Nothing wrong with paint stripper so long as it does come in contact with the seals. As with any paint job, the prep is more then half the job. If your still flakin paint, then need to get more aggressive.

Now if they just show dips where pain has flaked off, and the rest is still good, then that's cosmetic.

I had my drive and a spare bead blasted then primed them with an epoxy primer from Stainless Steel-it. It's an industrial paint with 316 stainless dust (I think) in it. I then top coated it with a commercial satin black paint. I'm still putting the boat back together but it sat outside all winter and aside from getting dirty it held up fine.I should be in the water in the next few weeks but I keep it on the trailer so it's not the greatest test. Whichever route you go to strip it, if you have any pitting you'd need to use some sort of filler to get rid of it.
