Good morning everyone,

I have a 2010 V.P. 5L 270 hp sx drive engine. This boat only has 76 hours on it. My concern is all the problems I'm having with it. I'm the second owner and purchased the boat with only 26 hours on it back in Dec 2012. I had the boat in the water during summer, fall 2013. The boat was then taken back to dealer for service, winterizing, acid wash and storage.

I picked up the boat this year in May and its been in the water only 1 week. Twice the boat had to be taken back to dealer. First time was when I went to launch boat in May. I found the water inlet hose was chewed on stern drive. The reason I was even looking in this area was because dealer stated the trim gauge wasn't working. I was checking trim wires after learning info from this site (thanks you guys/gals saved me from having a problem on the water).

Here's my concern. The boat was attacked by rodent's over the winter. They ate the trim wires, water inlet hose, toilet, canvas from what I can tell. The dealer was great to take responsibility and fixed all the problems. I then found molding that was melted during shrink wrapping (which dealer clams never happened there), but is willing to fix in the fall when I return boat for storage.

Finally In June I was able to launch boat. After 1 week in the water I found white milky oil coming from stern drive prop. I quickly pull out boat and checked drive. Saw milky oil around screw head while looking through prop. Back to dealer I went with boat. On the way front (brake axle) wheels on twin axle trailer was throwing out grease. When I checked wheels only the front axle wheels were really hot and the wheels were covered in grease. This is the second time its happened. When I was purchasing the boat trailer combo the dealer was taking parts off trailer and using them as replacement for other clients. This was a brand new trail when I purchased it with the boat. Now back to the milky oil. I've been informed the oil seal is leaking in stern drive and needs replacement. Trouble is Volvo Penta Canada is out of stock. Is this a common problem that these oil seals leak?

I guess what I'm asking is should I move onto another dealer? I'm a second year boater and know nothing about repairing boats or the problems associated with them. I don't know if the dealer is responsible for the axle problems and the oil seal. Could this happen if it was not serviced properly during the storage?

Thanks

LT

You use the boat/ trailer in salt water?
The trailer in fresh water shouldn't be a problem for a few years.
Salt water? It needs to be serviced yearly.
I repack my bearings 1-2 times a year and I only go about 1 mi to the ramp.
The dealer's mechanic(new or trainee) might be tightening the axel nuts too tight and the bearings get hot?
A new outdrive really shouldn't have problems either.
But a seal can go bad ANYTIME!!!
Cobe Marine in Pasadena, Md. can probably get the seals.
As far as another dealer??? It sounds like he's doing what he's supposed to.
Another dealer will probably charge to fix the others problems.

Thanks JJ05,

Boat is in fresh water north of great lakes area Canada side. The wheels were repaired once already because of grease coming out last year. Trailer has about 200 miles on it when the grease came out again. I do have a trailer controller installed on truck would that have anything to do with loosing grease and heated wheels? As for the stern drive I think the first owner hit the drive on something. There was a chip out of the that small fin at the bottom. It was also bent a bit and the dealer straighten it plus filled the missing chip out piece. The radio on boat has been replaced also and now need replacing again. To me there just seems to be to many things going wrong. Does anybody have a spare rabbits foot I could use. LOL

I'm mad about the rodent's and I guess that is putting my mind in the wrong direction with the dealer. Maybe I'll have to give him credit every time I get mad he seems to do something nice. Besides I'm getting great gas mileage on the boat. To bad its on land. lol

Thanks
