Need Advice on Trailer

I recently purchased a 29 foot Powerquest that weighs 6500 ponds dry. It came with a dual axle aluminum 7000 pound trailer with 14 inch tires along with a 2 inch hitch. The suspension is torsion and it does have disc brakes on only one axle. This trailer was thrown in on the sale. I don't think this trailer is suited for the weight of this boat and was wondering if someone would chime in and let me know what are my options? Would it be worth upgrading the trailer to handle a 10K capacity by upgrading the torsion suspension and then going with 15 inch 6-lug tires along with a new 2 and 5/16 inch receiving hitch or just cut my losses and look for a HD 10K pound capacity trailer?

You are definately overloaded, sell it & go with the bigger one.

I wouldn't mess with it either..... Sell and put the $ towards a proper trailer......

X3

Unless you have the engineering experience to determine the capacity of the rest of the trailer then just upgrading axles, tires, and coupler would be pointless.

One possible exception would be if the manufacturer of the trailer could tell you what would be needed to upgrade it but I'm still doubtful and I think you are better off to sell and buy a trailer better suited to your needs.

Don't mess with trying to upgrade it. Start fresh with one that was made to handle more weight. My boat is 6,500 lbs dry and I put it on an 8,000 lbs trailer without thinking twice. You also want to get one with brakes on both axles for safety. Trying to stop roughly 10,000 lbs. with just truck brakes is no fun. Been there done that. Blew out one set of brake lines on the truck and nearly had a heart attack in the process.

Agree with the others. Don't try to upgrade- buy a heavier rig.

Continental Trailers are manufactured down in Miami and probably has a dealer nearby. They put brakes on all axles (as required) as part of the pricing and use thicker I-Beams (at least on the heavier duty models)

I compared them to a manufacturer near you that sells their trailer under several names. That manufacturer uses thinner I-Beams and was trying to sell me a 8-10K trailer with no brakes because I probably wouldn't get caught

Amazing, but I've run into clowns like that myself. It never occurs to the idiot that he just told a prospective customer 'I never let ethics interfere with business.'

Yeah, I'd be falling all over myself to give my hard earned money to that guy. He's obviously trustworthy...

Exactly.

Oh, and I agree with a post you made about folks underestimating their trailers weight (though I think some buy lightweight trailers like the ones I mentioned). My trailer weighs a lot (I went HD) but it's worth it to me.
