I'm rebuilding my 50 HP Johnson's carbs today since the motor runs great one day, funny the next, after sitting up for 4 years without running.

Might as well eliminate junk in the carbs.

I've got the carbs removed and am working on the first one. I've removed the float and am the step where it says "remove and discard all gaskets, O-rings or sealing washers in the carburetor body casting".

I'm to the point where the parts I have remaining in my rebuild kit include 4 aluminum(?) metal discs that are slightly beveled on one side. I can also see where the carb housing has 4 similar sized discs on the housing that are now flattened.

1) How do I remove the old ones?
2) How do I install the new ones?
3) Is this a crucial step in a rebuild?

I'm using a Clymer manual. I appreciate the help.
